I don't have issues with viruses or anything but it just seems stupid to not have something occasionally scanning the machine.

Also I currently share my computer with my roommate/guests sometimes, none of whom are that dumb, but people make mistakes. I already use Spybot & MWB when I think there's something wrong, but I'd like something basic doing a scan every now and then.

Try malwarebytes. It's free and you can easily disable its background process. Finds everything. Adw cleaner is good too.

Keyword, occasionally. Run malwarebytes on a schedule if you feel you are too retarded to be online without a babysitter. Don't run something that actively scans every single file thats accessed.

AV is a joke. When have you heard a story about a serious infection and "oh no, if only they had installed NOD32 ANTIVIRUS!!!!"
