I am /g/, any time I need a program I pretty much just search "open source ____" and download whatever comes up

Chromium is a massive project at this point. I highly doubt one person on g will have the time to go through line by line and look for malicious code in such a big project. It's infeasible. You have to have faith that the community will uncover problems. This is the advantage of open source. It can be audited. Instead of shitposting why don't you go through your favourite open source project and look for problems.
