My original iPhone developed something similar a few years in, though not as severe. Started off as pixels in the top left corner turning grey and advancing across the screen, rate of about 1 line a week. Eventually the greyed area split into two blobs, one shrank down, some of the greyed pixels returned to normal. The other grew into a thumb sized blob in the upper right, the middle of the blob eventually turned black. Digitizer still worked in that area however.
