Why did they have to develop Display-port as yet another standard? Couldn't everyone just settle on HDMI?

No, because HDMI isn't good enough.
i feel like reading the first few paragraphs of the DP page on wikipedia answers this question pretty fully. what about those paragraphs on DP's purpose wasn't very convincing to you?
Because fuck your royalty-laden bullshit connector.
DP has NO SOUND
also no DRM or royalties

This:
>DisplayPort is the first interface to rely on packetized data transmission
>... allows both internal and external display connections
>... allowing higher resolutions with fewer pins
>data packets also allow DisplayPort to be extensible, meaning additional features can be added over time without significant changes to the physical interface itself.
These seem like good enough reasons to me. Several of these are importantly unavailable with HDMI.
And honestly, DisplayPort is backwards compatible with HDMI - you can use a very very cheap adapter to get the two working. This isn't like with VGA and DVI where you might've needed special components to transfer a digital signal to analog or vice versa.
We don't live in some utopian era where all displays use the same ports, but we're really fucking close at this point.

how hard can it be to add sound though?
why isnĀ“t it being done
>DP has NO SOUND
Except it fucking does.

>Q. Does DisplayPort also support audio?
>A. Yes, DisplayPort supports multi-channel audio and many advanced audio features. DisplayPort to HDMI adapters also include the ability to support HDMI audio.

DP does carry sound. My P2415Q carries sound when I plug my laptop in by MiniDP.
It currently is being done. I can't fathom why anyone would want this, because my monitor doesn't have especially good speakers in it, but I could imagine someday hooking nice speakers up to my monitor *I guess*.
I would be more interested in DP acting as a USB interface to get my laptop to the USB ports that are almost invariably offered on monitors. Sure, let us have the USB type A port, but if the MiniDP cable gave me the monitor *and* all the peripherals attached to it that would be really useful. Again, the audio coming out of monitors is usually garbage, and I don't know anyone routing good speakers through those things.
