I did it. I replaced all of my HDDs into SSDs. OS is on a 250GB

OS is on a 250GB Samsung pro. The rest is on two 1TB Samsung 850 EVOs

Hey OP, SSDs also are great for long term storage because no moving parts

Just saying, so you can fully get into SSD

>SSD for storage

Dumbass.

You paid $300 for a 1TB SSD.

Meanwhile I got 9TB for $300.($100 per 3TB HDD).

I can understand maybe having an additional 500GB SSD for gaymen and your big programs, but two 1TB's?

Fucking stupid.

How is it?

I'm planning the exact same thing with a 240 + 960gb.

Got 1tb + 2tb externals drives to hold my game isos and movies and shit, want to get away from hard drives entirely.

Using an SSD is utterly pointless for video games. You don't know anything about technology, you just spout /g/ memes to make yourself feel superior.

There are RAIDs for that. Also,

Go ahead and load up a modded KSP on a hard drive, faggot.

I'll be in space with my SSD by the time you do.

My SSD died after 5 years.
Well, it didn't "die", but it started randomly fucking up and deleting shit on my drive. I started noticing programs and entire folders missing. Then my computer would just freeze for long periods of time. Never would have thought it'd be the SSD.

Meanwhile my HDD's have been working great for +6 years.

>>56402614
RAID.

>>56402615
No.
It's not.

It's almost like you don't know that games spend a good chunk of their time loading up thousands of textures.

You're stupid.

with raid you can simply replace the dead drive without losing anything, and you'll still get ssd-like speeds too.

you get more bang for your buck.

SSDs are nothing more than a /g/ meme. No one seriously uses them in industry because of the extremely limited number of writes. Also they cost a fuck ton more per gigabyte, and do not have the capacity to hold the entire operating system and applications for a modern computer workstation. The speeds are barely faster than 10000 rpm drives, especially when you consider the fact that most of your hard drive accesses are going through RAM caches anyway, you aren't going to hit the actual disk every time. The only thing SSDs have is *slightly* faster bootup times. But bootup is less than 1% of computer use time, so it's not really a metric worth optimizing for. Just hibernate your PC instead of shutting it off, or grow some pateince and wait the 10 extra seconds to boot up with a normal hard drive.

Depending on the type of failure, you can recover somewhere between 70-80% of your data from an HDD, potentially without paying anything.

Your data is completely lost forever if the SSD malfunctions. And you don't just have to worry about physical wear of the NAND but also the controller which is destroyed way earlier most of the time.
>>
>>56402891
Both of them. All drives fail. It's futile, your data is doomed. You are doomed.
>>
>>56402779
>no moving parts
>less heat
>less energy
>much faster access times
>much faster read/write
Only problem is the cost and the limited endurance, but depending on the work, SSDs may be ideal. We'll see who innovates what in this sector, and when they do it'll be the final blow to HDDs. I give it 5 years.

Network engineer here, I probably installed more corporate amd government systems this year than you're ever likely to see in your lifetime.

work with switches and routers and the like which rarely have SSDs except for things like the current gen Cisco ASAs.

I'm sure you're a network engineer if you're performing the duties of a data center operations tech. I bet you have your CCIE dont you rack monkey?
>>
>>56403905
If you had a real job and didn't get all your tech knowledge from /g/ then you'd know that business and government loves windows server for things like DHCP and DNS.
If you had a real job you'd also know that boxes of things such as SSD's sometimes fall into your hands when you'd least expect it.

I only own one laptop and a Raspberry Gen 1.

My laptop has two Intel SSD
250gb for Windows and programs
250gb for steam and games
1tb in the central(hdcaddy) mechanical drive for storage (mp3 and backups)

Rip has 1TB usb drive for torrentboxing and Hentai.

You might easily need more than that if you have photo/videography as a hobby and do redundancy / backups.

Or you could just have a porn collection.

Who cares. It's just 12TB. That can be had in barely more than one 3.5" drive these days.
>>
>>56402600
I must give you this: price/performace wise SSDs are horrible for mass data storage.
Buying 3TB HDDs is stupid aswell, though.

Worse than HDD, but $100 for 500GB on SSD is not too "horrible"

I'm perhaps just old...
>>
>>56404429
Closer to pro driver/commuter than rackmonkey but whatever.
>>
>>56404452
>not too "horrible"
They ARE horrible.

I can get a 4Tb HDD for 120$
So compared to this, SSDs are utter trash price/capacity wise, and that's what counts when talking about mass storage.
>>
>>56404452
>>56404499

price/performance always follow efficiency and market adoption, cost shouldn't be a bottle neck for growth. current prices are realistic and geared towards transitive R&D, the edge needs to stay sharp.
>>
>>56404570
How is this a valid statement out of a consumers eye, that wants to get the most for his dollar?
>>
>>56404499
Nah, that's merely better - but $100 for 500GB is easy either way.

Many requirements could get you pretty quickly to introduce a fair number of SSD over HDD into your storage cloud.
>>
>>56404499
You can get 3TB tape for $25.

>>
>>56404631
Good point, although that defeats the purpose of what normal consumers call "mass storage".

Also tape recording and reading hardware is so fucking expensive that price/storage is bad if you don't already own one.

On top of that price/performance (speed, accessibility etc.) is shit, HDDs are still the best for the normal consumer. (again, when looking at mass storage only)

>>56404615
>a fair number
If the data on my storage cloud is accessed frequently or if I intend to play games from my server, then yes. If this is not the case, and its simply used as an archive, you literally cant come up with a convincing argument against HDDs.
>>
>>56404669
> if I intend to play games from my server
Is there any particular reason to move your games to your storage cloud server, rather than using a local SSD...?

> If this is not the case, and its simply used as an archive, you literally cant come up with a convincing argument against HDDs
Together with the rest you posted - I guess it's ideal for you to just have HDD, sure.
>>
>>56404830
>I guess its ideal for YOU to have HDD
No, the point is its ideal for the big majority of consumers.

Also I would never play games from my server, that was just an example.
