Is it even possible to pirate Microsoft Office anymore if you want to keep your PC updated?
I'm told Windows Update just checks for pirated copies of Office 2013 and later and destroys them.

Yeah probably. That sounds right.
Yes. It gets up and smashes any external media containing Office 2013, and burns your internal hard drives with a welding torch.
Have you tried Installing Gentoo? You should try Installing Gentoo.

debian testing doesn't have this problem
Is there any real reason to upgrade from old editions?

You can't subscribe for windows updates with your pirated windows.
However it's really easy to shutdown the update service now and you should do it. Keep in mind that it's not recommended for enterprises.
Microsoft Office 2016 is the last desktop based Microsoft Office so you should switch to the web based product to keep easy. Now if you really want to be illegal, don't expect so much!
