Looking for career advice /g/ents. Should I go into programming or systems administration? I'm just working basic help desk right now so I could work towards either during this time. The way I look at the costs and benefits is:

Programming
>higher pay for comparable success
>ability to work from home or freelance
>more long-term ability to form my own business or make money on the side

Sysadmin
>less vulnerable to being replaced by Pajeets
>can live in a wider variety of places, not just tech centers
>can be a very comfy job once you get everything set up correctly

Anything anyone would like to add to the benefits of either? I'm leaning programming now but am really worried about Pajeets taking my job in the long run.

Do what ever is more appealing to you.

I'm looking for other peoples opinions so I can have more information and make a better decision on what is appealing to me.

I mean if you enjoy programming just do it. Pajeets can't take every job especially if you network right

I'm not talking about that kind of appeal. I mean, what do you want to spend the rest of your life doing? Would you regret not picking one over the other later on.

I want to do systems administration. What training should I get?
I know my way around Linux and Windows machines and I've got a basic grasp of networking, but I don't have any formal education.

A life of creative indulgement or comfort?
Which do you want hehe?

CS undergrad here.

Even as I know how to program, I did find sysadmin less stressful, and less prone to deal with rockstars and divas who think they are the ultimate shit on earth.

Either way, you'll need to stay on your toes and always read whats going on in your field. As an IT worker I'm sure you found many of your colleagues are slacking dumbfucks that want to solve every problem by reformatting the HDD.

I still do some tech support and helpdesk.

I wouldn't mind doing either. I like programming, but figure that having to deal with other people and being forced to work on projects I don't personally care about would make me not care as much. I like networking as well and could definitely find satisfaction in controlling and creating great systems.

I've been told the first thing to do is get a basic help desk job, if you have no experience getting an A+ cert will allow you to get one of these positions. Then you work your way up.

>>56293911
But I can see the creativity and skill in setting up a well-maintained enterprise system as well. I can always program in my free time on projects I like.

>>56294066
This is a pretty compelling viewpoint to me. I really would hate hearing everyone thinking they're the shit and signaling to each other about meme languages all day. I want to work as independently as possible.

>>56294285
You aren't "forced" to work on anything. If you're a good programmer you could be hired just about anywhere.

> good programmer

Well, he's on /g/ so we know that isn't the case.
