I want to get more into programming and want to finally start learning Linux?

What's the best distro and desktop environment?

Currently looking at arch and Kali. Any opinions?
>>
>>56285103
why the fuck would you even consider Kali for programming?
>>
>>56285103
arch and kali are not for beginners
>>
>>56285103
Install Gentoo
>>
OP here, my best option would be arch with Kali in a VM I think
>>
>>56285141
Start with Ubuntu and see if you even like Linux first rather than diving in headfirst. Kali if good if you're a network engineer or a skiddie, but I'm guessing you're neither.
>>
>>56285162
I've already used Ubuntu and actually installed arch like 4 years ago. I enjoyed using arch but not ubuntu
>>
>>56285162
Ubuntu requires so little configuration or work in general that it's not even that great to tell whether or now you like linux. Arch is a lot harder to use at first but if you have the patience to figure it out it'll be a lot better, especially if you want to learn rather than having something that just werks

I wanna get a really cheap laptop and put arch on it so I can feel cool and learn to program. I heard chromebooks are good for this.
>>
>>56285199
who cares that ubuntu works ootb, you can still learn the system's architecture and use all it's tools

I changed moved from Ubuntu recently and I feel pretty comfy using gnu/Linux right now
>>

Noob here,

Please explain in which ways arch is better
>>
freeBSD
>>
>>56285103
there's a reason why Debian is the de facto OS on raspberry pi, a device specifically targeted towards kids to learn programming.

You will always have to deal with that crappy storage space. A used ThinkPad T420 will be more useful.
RHEL Certification videos are a great way to learn Linux quickly. You'll need Fedora. Ricing Arch is more fun, but you won't learn as much. Your call.

its good for filling the lives of neets with meaningless time killing procedures

I like freeBSD. But it's now severly vulnerable. Well BSDs suffer from the lack of security anyways: It's either ports (to make up for the tremendous lack of softwares) or security
