Is a two year CompTIA certificate from my local community college worth anything?
No
well the A+ can get you a helpdesk job pretty easily which usually nets a comfy job that's higher than minimum wage as long as you don't mind dealing with dumb people

2 Years old? Yes.
Capitalize on it today before it expires... Then it will be truly useless.
If you're still in skewl get an internship -> job out of it.
In two years, you should have compTIA A+, CCNA/MCSE (or both), and Linux+.
Minimum.
what's the point of a degree when I could get certs?

Not at all

Because you want promotions.

>feel zero self worth and feel that paying it all out of pocket is for nothing
What certs are worth getting besides the java one?
No fib, I don't know why people get these certifications people talk about on /g/. What kind of jobs require them? >>56282219 mentioned help desk, but are they all for these shitty customer service jobs?

>two year comptia certificate
That doesn't exist. Is it an associate's degree or something? Is it as CompTIA prep academy?
If your school's a CompTIA academy then you get huge discounts (~50%) on the certs. Getting the CompTIA trinity of A+, Net+, and Sec+ would give you a solid understanding of many subjects if you actually studied and understood the material as opposed to exam dumped or crammed. Oh and the Linux+ isn't too bad either, you actually net the LPIC-1 with it. Maybe you could go and get the LPIC-2 after or RHCSA/RCE after if you really like Linux.
There's other career paths as well. Like Networking? Go Cisco CCNA/CCNP Like Microsoft? MCSA/MCSE. Like Security? Go.. actually I can't say CISSP (5 years exp. required) or GIAC (too expensive)

Nigger, programming certs are useless and people would seriously question your intelligence in an interview if they saw one. Better to just do projects instead.

CompTIA is entry level and A+ is literally THE helpdesk cert so in that case yeah, shitty customer service (technical) job.
At the higher levels, there's shit like the CCIE which is basically a PhD in networking.

You could pass CompTIA A+ by spending 2 days to read a book.
So it's worth 2 days of study.

Interesting, thanks. I guess I only know programmers or similar jobs you just get with a bachelor's in compsci or softeng, as none of my friends have certifications like these.
