I see what you're getting at, OP, but the only difference between what Apple's doing here and how your average run-of-the-mill Android OEM handles manufacturing defects is that the iPhone has a marketshare figure significant enough for it to be reported.
It's not an Apple thing, it's an institutionalized corporate unaccountability thing.
