Picked this up on eBay for £16. It's from 1976. The strap is obviously aftermarket, but feels alright. I have no real need to replace it for now.

Here's my hmt rajat I bought for $14 five years ago.

Its supposed to be an automatic but the fly wheel broke within a week. Thankfully you can still manually wind it.

Going strong for five years. Have to wind it everyday but love it. Accuracy is +20 secs per month.

You know, I am not a fan of Steinhart in fact I don't even own one. But I think its a better watch than the Citizen, especially since it has a ETA 2824-2 which is the same movement used in Tudor watches. It also has sapphire which could have benefited you seeing all of the scratches. And 316L stainless steel which is more durable and scratch/rust resistance than what Citizen/Seiko uses. I am also pretty sure its cheaper as well.

If leather, you'll want to spend at least $50 to get a decent one. Otherwise you're better off with what comes with it. Also don't buy any strap that is labelled "genuine leather". Make sure it's at least top grain and idealy full grain. Hirsch, Crown and Buckle, and Le Luca are probably your best bet.

You are completely utterly wrong. The NH35/A is made in Japan, which is why it said made in japan on the movement. The 4R36 which is the same movement found in the Seiko Turtle and Sumo is made in Malaysia. Seiko and Seiko/Epson Instruments does not make any of their movements in China. Sure Invictas are assembled in China but the movements came from Japan.

My friend bought a Invicta with a NH35 and it was surprisingly accurate. I put it on my timegrapher and measured it in a few different positions and it only varied between -2 to 3 s/d. Not sure how long that accuracy will last though. Also he never wears it because it looks too much like a Rolex, only bought it to add a diver to his collection.

If you go quartz may as well go thermo-compensated:

A typical quartz watch like a cheap casio is specified to +/- 30 seconds a month or +/- 1 s/d.
A typical mechanical watch will keep time to +/- 10 s/d. A chronometer grade more like +/- 3 s/d.
A thermo-compensated quartz will keep time to +/- 10 seconds per year or +/- 0.027 s/d.

So.. a quartz watch is typically 10 times more accurate than a mechanical watch, but a thermo-compensated quartz is 37 times more accurate than a regular quartz, and 370 times more accurate than a typical mechanical.

Around $340. COSC Tissot or Certina DS-2 are options. But you can get a Bulova Precisionist that has some pretty cool tech in it that makes them comparable to thermocompensated quartz without traditional thermocompensation. Those you can get for $150 at the cheapest.

Typically quartz inaccuracy comes from the fact that the quartz crystal's oscillation rate is dependent on temperature. A thermo-compensated watche use a circuit that measures the temperature and compensates by changing how many oscillations the circuit has to count to advance a second. Bulova's precisionist movements don't have this circuit so are not thermo-compensated quartz movements. What then is the reason for the inaccuracies? And what is the reason why the rates vary with orientation? And equally importantly, what can be done to improve?

Having worked on photo lithography and dry etching I am surprised this is not more used than in a few of the more peculiar Ulysse Nardin watches. Then again Oechslin was a physicist.

Because all the main mechanical watch makers stopped giving the slightest fuck about improving the actual practical engineering of their movements with regards to accuracy and shock resistance in 1975.

The revival of mechanical watches in the post-Quartz era has been driven almost entirely by marketing a fabricated image of luxury, status and prestige where it only matters that the watch is mechanical and what level of "prestige" the movement has, since 99% of the people buying mechanical watches today don't understand movements in the slightest and cannot meaningfully compare the features of a fucking garbage bin tier Miyota 821a to an ETA 2824-2, much less identify and value the finer points of movement engineering.

They pretend to care about movements, but can only tell you what they've read about their relative "prestige." Most of these oblivious mechanicucks don't even own a case back openener and have never even learned to regulate them.

The truth is, the market of mechanical buyers doesn't give the slightest fuck about movement accuracy because they are buying the looks of the watch and it's associated brand and model "prestige" "luxury" and "social status"

I'm not the Steinshit shill, actually I can't stand Steinshit and I don't even particularly regard the ETA 2824-2 highly, but it's certainly head and shoulders better in every technical respect than a Miyota 821a or Seiko 7s26c.

The broader point was that most mechanical buyers literally don't understand mechanical movements and don't care about accuracy and shock resistance in any meaningful way, so modern mechanical makers invest in marketing the right image rather than in making better engineered movements. Volume produced mechanical movements peaked in 1975 with probably the sole exception of Rolex going to +-2s/d recently.

I regulate my own watches and have built my own watch. But mine are mostly inexpensive.. I doubt that someone who has paid more than 2k on their watch would want to open it and touch the insides. I think I've had enough of mechanical watches for now though, they are too finicky, so my future watch purchases are going to be exclusively tc quartz or spring drive.

Some of the spring drives have nice faces (Spacewalk, Landmasters etc.) but are humongous and thick.

After 4 years of use, including 2 years of army time my Orient Mako got scratched the FUCK up, bezel, tachymeter, glass, you name it.
The metal band is in pretty good condition only because I went nato about a year in.
Also it keeps pretty bad time, I lose about 3 minutes every week.

Can I send it to Orient somehow for a servicing and replacement of glass and tachymeter?
If so how much would that cost?
Or do I just get a new one/new watch altogether?

I'm going to be a full-time student in about a year and I think I'll get a seamaster by then, so I might just stick it out.

Honestly you'd probably be better off just buying a new one. You can get a new generation Mako from Long Island Watch for $180. Unless you can do it yourself it's not really cost effective to repair these cheap mechanical watches. You just wear them until they're fucked and then buy something new.

The fact that you posted that without knowing that the Caliber 80 is actually an ETA 2824-2 turned into a fucking Swatch Sistem51 piece of garbage is a prime example of the ignorance I am talking about.

The Caliber 80 is an ETA 2824-2 with the following bastardizations:

- beat rate lowered
- drivetrain parts made thinner and weaker
- Longer mainspring which puts more torque on the drivetrain
- a fucking plastic balance wheel and pallet fork with the plastic balance wheel being laser cut at the factory and it cannot be re-regulated afterwards

It's basically an unserviceable piece of shit. In 5 years when you take your Tissot/Mido/Hamilton to be serviced for for some outrageous sum by an officially authorized Swatch srrvice center they are going to laugh, throw away the movement and replace it with a new one, close the watch and count your money and laugh again.

It's not based off a 2824-2 though, its based off of ETA C07.621 which is a distant relative of the 2824. Also, I didn't say that the Calibre 80 is the best movement in the world, I just said that they were doing something at least somewhat new/interesting. I would never buy a Sistem 51 because its unserviceable and has plastic components, but from an engineering perspective it's definitely interesting. I would like to know what the actual service life of the movement is but generally a 21,600 movement will have a longer service life than a 28,000 movement. Also the beat is probably lowered for this reason as well as the longer power reserve. I don't know what materials it's made out of or if there are any plastic components in it but would like to see a tear-down of it. However I know that it did have to pass COSC certification for what that's worth. Either way I wouldn't buy it anyways due to being unserviceable. I'd rather buy a TC quartz where the service is just replacing the battery.

The 2836-2 COSC Mido is actually cheaper than the Calibre 80 Mido by $140. So is the Calibre 80 actually better than a COSC 2836-2 or are you just paying the price for a new tech? I've seen it mentioned that the Calibre 80 uses a NIVACHOC shock-absorber, a NIVAFLEX NM mainspring, and a ELINCHRON II balance-spring. Anyone know how these components compare to what the 2836 has? Or are they too new to know anything about?
