Talk about anything graphics card related here. Questions, e-peen measuring, etc.

>Tonight on /gcg/:
I fell for the 3.5 meme lads. After debating if I should shell out 350€ for a 480/1060, I ended up grabbing my cousin's old 970 for 200€. Was still a win/win though, I got an huge boost from my previous 280x, as most of what I play favors nvidia designs, and he got the leverage to upgrade to a 1070.

You know that /g/ is not really a tech board like 8 chan's /tech/ right?

I mean with the daily "generals" for the most stupid shit ever like you can find on reddit it really didn't ring a bell yet?
>>
>>56254911

Forza runs a bit better on amd, and gta heavily favors nvidia, you have to decide which one you play the most.

Nvidia's advantage on gta is larger than amd's on forza, fwiw.

Any opinions on the palit 1070s? They are there only OEM not charging founder edition prices for their cards
>>

Palit/gainward are pretty decent cards, fairly high clocked on oc versions. Even better if you like the looks of cards with beefy coolers.

No.

The 970 I mentioned in the op is an msi one that sold without a backplate, and sagged like a motherfucker. After installing a coldzero backplate the thing sits now as straight as it can be.

According to reviews, Palit's Super Jetstream and Gainward's Phoenix Golden Sample cards are among the best you can buy. They're cool, quiet and have the highest boost clocks.

I was going to get the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW HYBRID when it comes out as I need something that can do very heavy workloads and stay cool and quite in a case with not a ton of airflow. Am I just the worst at making decisions?

>>

The case I picked is low key to keep people from thinking I have something worth stealing. Also it will be shoved in a corner next to my desk which will mainly be the cause of the low airflow.

What determines how much of a housefire a gpu is, is it the temperatures it gets or the power consumption?
>>
>>56255701

Yeah the 200r falls a bit short on temperatures for some reason. Might sound like shilling, but I can't recommend the Midi R2 enough, which does a lot better here. Sadly Portugal is a very warm country and even with the case I have some trouble cooling my parts, an msi 970 shouldn't reach 75° while gaming for instance, so adding to finally getting an ac this winter (now it's not a good time to buy one), I'm planning some part moving.

Well. upgraded my card from 290x to 1070 which on par with 980Ti. The fps diffrence at least 20 fps in most benchmark.

firestrike score 14000 for 290x oc to 1100/1525 while 1070 around 21000 OC to 2100 boost/4700.
Constant 60 fps on Metro 2033 redux at 1440p while 290x with frequent drop to 40fps.
290x still a really good card for 1080p though. Even batter than RX480.
>>
>>56257105

You'll find in most DX12 games as of right now a 290x isn't far behind a 980ti - certainly close enough that the average overclock will catch it.

Are you OCing with the following software?
And how high are you able to go?

I haven't OCed yet but it seems the gpu lies around 1999mhz @ 73c during max load.
Not sure if it's worth OCing for an extra 100 or so hz if the temp is already this high.

Just replaced my 7950 with an msi rx470 yesterday. Haven't gotten to do much testing with it, but the time I spent with it on overrated was nice. Went from med-high settings ~100 fps to ultra settings rock solid 120 fps. Cool, and whisper quiet. Something funky is going on with it, though. Did some quick testing using svp and it was running choppy as fuck. Gonna reinstall my drivers, and figure out how to force a performance retest. The gpu just kept ramping the clock, and then dropping.

I know it's having some weird shit going on with its readouts though. Unigine heaven was reading framerates down at 40, but there was zero jitter on my 120hz screen. Only saw one tearing artifact through the entire test. The overwatch perf readout couldn't even display the temperature, and my Crimson software was laggy as fuck when going into wattman. Actually crashed once. Pretty sure I just need to reinstall my drivers to fix most of my issues.

Forgot to mention that the 470 was only using 1gb of vram while the 7950 was running at almost full capacity with 2.7 gb vram use. Vsync was on, so the frame rate was locked at 120. I'm saying that the performance increase was fairly substantial but in the short time I had with it I ran into some issues.

Theoretically, the software and drivers are all the same, but I'm pretty sure there are some missing tweaks since I didn't do a proper reinstall. They do list separate driver downloads between 7000 / 200-300 / and 400 series gpus. If the thread is still open, I'll report back after reinstalling the drivers. As far as svp is concerned, I know it has issues when you change hardware but it doesn't run its internal performance check.

Also it allows you to see how the same AIB partner compares on the same review site on the same test system.

I re-scaled the bars on some of the charts because they were not scaled the same for all reviews. It was a little guesswork but the numbers are the same so read the numbers and don't go by the bars alone.

Why is this game fucking up everything. I Thought I could max out games in 1080p with a 1060gtx and now ppl are saying I'll be lucky to hit high settings? People said that my 3570k didn't need an upgrade either but now this game is so intensive on the CPU that I pretty much need to upgrade my entire computer.

I thought the difference between an overclocked 3570k and the latest CPUs were minimal.

The thing is. Games have progressively required faster GPU's @ 1080p to maintain 60 fps. Anyone can run old games at 60 fps. But newer games will lawats push the hardware further even in full HD resolution. It still requires render farms to make that latest CGI movie look good even in standard HD.

First off, no one hashes SHA-256 (Bitcoin's Algorithm) on GPUs anymore. ASICs have been around for several years now and you wouldn't even make a few cents in a year mining Butcoin with GPUs.

They mine Ethereum, an ALTERNATIVE currency that is not related to Bitcoin at all. Even the source code is entirely different and does not follow the same principles of Butcoin. It has smart contracts and all sorts of development tools for programmers that utilize block chain technology.

With that being said, it's very profitable right now to mine Ethereum with an RX 480. One RX 480 can make about $350/month in Ethereum and they cost around $250-280 at the moment.

I do admit that miners abuse warranties. They also don't use 95% of the GPUs features either. If anything AMD should probably embrace this market share a bit and release a GPU structured just for mining to separate gaymers and miners.

What I really mean is how much a GPU heats up your room. Ive got a r9 390 and its unbearable in the summer here.

Id guess its the overall temps but that could just mean your fans are working very well.
>>
>>56261658

Well the more effecient a cooler the less heat that is retained in the chip/whatever and more is dumped into the room.

Unless your gpu is running at full load 24/7 no gpu is going to heat up a reasonable sized room.

>>
>>56259995

People are ass mad at it because it uses compute heavy effects. So they just explain it away that it's poorly optimized, when it runs like shit on their hardware.

AMD GPU's excel at compute, Nvidia stripped it out to give super fast shaders with high clock speeds.

It's also partially why their GPU's suck ass hole at asynchronous compute.

But Nvidia GPU's have a more efficient and streamlined design. With some nice tech like color compression and tile based rasterization means they can throw significantly less power at rendering graphics then AMD for the same work.

Just turn off the MSAA, that alone nets you anywhere from 10-20 frames on average. Then turn down shadows, and you should be good.

it isn't. the 1070 is more than twice the hashrate than the 470 and 480 are despite drawing the same power.

only poorfags and marketing drones fall for the 'AMD is better for mining' meme now. it was only true when GPU mining buttcoins was going on.

It's not just /g/ that happens on, it's everywhere. AMD is on an uphill battle. And we haven't even seen the effect Direct X 12 is going to have on this game. If it's this bad already, it's going to get even uglier for Nvidia.

I'm seriously starting to think that all Nvidia fans are genuinely retarded.
