I moved into an apartment complex recently and one of its selling points it boasts is free Wi-Fi to all residents. However, it's open Wi-Fi with no encryption whatsoever.

I'm a university student who needs to do confidential stuff on a daily basis sometimes and am wondering what I can do.

I've been making do with HTTPS Everywhere, but I don't think this is enough. My university offers a VPN but I don't know if that's a viable option. The apartment does have an Ethernet port, but is connecting directly to the wall any more secure than just connecting to open Wi-Fi?

What a rude mother

Are you able to plug in your own router??

At the very least, it'll be harder for your neighbor to mitm your connection or just passively snoop if you use the hard-wired connection. I'd definitely be using that instead.

There are a bunch of cheap VPN services out there. It never hurts to use one of those, but I'd caution against using them for anything personal unless you can specify a preferred exit node that you trust. While it's true that anyone along your path can technically do passive surveillance, I'd wager that organizations that sign up to be VPN exits are going to be more likely to monitor the traffic.

well at least it should stop your neighbor from sniffing your traffic. Unless all the ethernet ports are connected to a hub instead of to a switch. Seeing as how this isn't the 90s, though, this is unlikely to be a problem. If you're concerned then yes, a VPN (either your universities or some other provider) will fix it, even if you're on the open wi-fi.

try sniffing some wireless traffic and see what kinds of porn your neighbors like.

Christ, I miss the old days when most websites weren't using SSL and Facebook passed its session cookies in cleartext.

>be me 8 years ago snooping wifi in school library
>hijack a facebook session and see grill
>not super cute but not ugly
>read a bunch of her private messages, learn more about her. Johnny Cash fan.
>she writes a status update: "I wish a man would come and sweep me off of my feet!"
>holy shit, too perfect
>walk around the library for a while until I find her on the bottom floor in a corner
>*clear throat* "Hey there"
>she looks up, eyes immediately go to the thinning hair spiked up like Vegeta, then down to the open fly on my green corduroys that are a couple of sizes too small
>(I gained a lot of weight my freshman year)
>since she's saying nothing, I interject:
>"I know it's 11pm and getting pretty late, but we should go grab a drink down at Blue Canyon. Karaoke is starting soon and I need a June Carter to my Johnny Cash."
>she looks at my Mike Tyson's Punchout t-shirt, starts fidgeting
>"Look," I continue. "Full disclosure. I hacked your Facebook and saw you post that you wanted a man to sweep you off your feet. And I'm going to rip up your carpet like a mean motherfucker, don't get me wrong. But first, the Tranya. And maybe then we'll sing Jackson."
>It's a tiny engineering school in Colorado, she must get the Star Trek reference.

Long story short, I ended up dating that girl for several years. And that story was entirely true except for the thinning hair and weird clothing, which was added for comedic value. I've always been a pretty good-looking guy, and that pickup routine would have landed me in jail otherwise.

These days, the Internet is only good for snooping on webcams and misconfiguring SCADA on grain silos in Kansas. Pic related.
