Fedora was the first Distro I ever used several years ago. I've been trying different distributions throughout the years but I just recently switched back to Fedora. They have one of the better default Gnome configurations.
>Distro/WM
GNOME/Gnome Shell
>Why?
XFCE's screen tearing is bad out of the box
KDE is bloated a bit more than Gnome
i3wm is okay, I actually love it. But if you play around too much with it you'll break it and I don't have a github for dot files or anything.

Gnome 3 is simply the quickest DE to rice to a way that *I* want my distro to be. I could build the same aesthetic on i3wm but it will take me at least 2 hours to tinker it in a way that I want it.

Because I got sick of babysitting rolling release distros like arch and didn't want to selectively hackjob debian.

I stick with LTS releases and give new cycles a bit to sort any launch bugs. Minimal install because I still don't care for unity, and would rather put my own setup in.

I like the compromise of up-to-date packages and stability I don't need to constantly fret over.

Why?: No systemd or openRC both seemed to have stability issues at times. I've tried Sabayon (great before the Systemd switch), Manjaro, Calculate (It was good until Python wouldn't update correctly which prompted me to try something new before attempting a re-install with current media which lead to Void). I prefer the rolling release with NVIDIA drivers included in the mix.

>>
>>56248575

Well... This computer has Intel HD3000, and AMD Radeon 6570M.

The main problem it had (i shit you not, this is a decisive condition) is that Gzdoom wouldnt work. It would be a black screen because Mesa couldnt build a shader.

BUT, it so happens that there is this gzdoom legacy branch, which uses opengl 3, and it runs well

And i JUST FOUND OUT about that.

I installed antergos in a aux partition, isntalled gzdoom 1.9.1, and it actually runs better than in Mint

I may change my answer to this thread in a few days, because I really love AUR.

I used Slackware from the 90s up to about 2 years ago. Couldn't find time for the tedium of maintaining it with my kids and job. Went with the fire-and-forget method of using the most popular desktop distro. I also tried Fedora, but it's not nearly as usable out of the box for my purposes.

It's based off of Tinywm, but really the only added functionalities are menus, tiling and window grouping. It runs in <1MB RAM though, so that's nice.

I prefer apt and I like having many different branches to choose or fall back onto when installing packages. I also like large repositories and was not a fan of potential security and dependency issues with community repositories I've used on other distros in the past. It generally also tends to be well supported, but I'm kinda shooting myself in the foot with regards to that for using the unstable branch.

So like most, I started from an ubuntu flavor. However, dist-upgrades between versions was driving me mad. Every time I did, something stopped working, but I could never find the documentation necessary to fix it. So I just had to deal with annoying errors.

Then I installed arch after a while, because "hey, why not?" I was interested in a more friendly package manager. On my X220, Fell in love with it. Nothing has ever broken on me seriously, and I don't have to deal with weird dependencies or adding ppa's mindlessly.

I also tried debian, but the way their repository works is fucking bananas. I like testing for what it is, but there was a weird lack of certain packages. So I tried upgrading to unstable, and then suddenly those packages had no candidate either even though they were there. Never fun into a problem like this on arch, and I got tired of fighting with the OS just to install some minor shit. The hardest part of arch is installing it. I like the arch philosophy, and rolling release distros are pretty nice.

Normally I'd run openSUSE on this, but after switching down to Leap from Tumbleweed and wanting to go back to Tumbleweed, I found that Tumbleweed's installer was broken at the time.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

The only proprietary package on my system is the wifi driver. I think replacing the wificard in a T420s and making it work requires flashing the BIOS so that'll be a project for the future.
