Grab a key tester, they're pretty cheap and you get a good idea of what's best for you. I think some places also offer a discount if you then buy a full board from them.

No idea, reds I guess.

I need function keys but no numpad required. 60%?

>Backlight
Doesn't matter.

>Previous/current keyboards
Logitech G510, otherwise I've always used the cheapest keyboard I can grab from Best Buy like GE or Insignia shit.
>>
>>56232990
Well, I did get to try Reds (briefly), Blues and Browns, as well as buckling springs, but none of them for any prolonged period of time. The problem is my budget is high enough to consider Topre, and I'd really love to test those, especially which one of the three weight options (variable/45g/55g) I'd prefer most.

Just got my MagicForce 68 with Outemu Blacks; kinda feels like shit compared to my hipster vintage ALPS boards, but the linear feel is totally usable for the price. And now I have a board I can get meme caps for. Also it was $33 on amazon. Forgive my gay mouse mat, it was free.

In a money is no concern situation, what's the best quality and most luxurious keyboard I'm looking to get?

80% form with browns

Colour customization and detachable cable, so I can easily get a snazzy braided one would both be plusses, but the cable is more important to me than colours

Reminder that mechanical keyboards are bad for any gaming that isnt starcraft. If you play action vidya or fps you will perform worse than with a cheap rubber dome. Dont fall for the meme kids and avoid Corsair and Razer garbagio.

So my CM Storm XT kicked the bucket and wont register the enter button anymore so Im looking for a replacement.

I got my eyes on a Ducky Shine 5 because of the clean look. (no huge logos on the front)
Any other recommendations of clean looking TK keyboard with blue switches that are around the price range of the Shine 5.
It should also have easily replacable switches because that keeps me from fixing my current keyboard. (I hate soldering)
>>
>>56234638
If you like the board, and it's literally just that one key you could change the switch for like, a dollar. That said, more keyboards is better.
>>

Why do these keycaps always look like they were made using play-doh by chris-chan?

>>
>>56234734
I'd be willing to bet a couple thousand dollars he's talking about the crash keycap and not the pbt caps.
>>
>>56234722
How can you hate soldering if you've never done it before?
>>
>>56234722
Doing a single switch is really easy, and this is coming from someone who fucking sucks at it. My first project was soldering a teensy adapter for my M0110, and it works (though it's hideous and if I can pay anyone to make one that's not ugly hit me up). A switch is a whole lot easier than a teensy. Also a soldering iron and a thing of solder is like $12. If you're going to get a new board anyway, why not give it a shot? It's a great skill to even have rudimentary ability to do.
>>
>>56234734
What he said >>56234762

All these special esc keys always look like playdoh or chewed bubblegum
>>
>>56234788
To follow that up, I see that someone on geekhack sells adapters now. awesome.
>>
>>56234788
So I need a soldering iron and a desolder pump and Im ready to go?
>>
>>56234913
For a single switch you don't really need a desoldering pump (I don't have one), but it certainly won't hurt. I used a braided desoldering cord when I was putting the teensy together. Before I had the confidence I had my friend desolder and replace a single switch on my M0110, and watching him do it gave me the confidence I needed; keyboard switches are very, very simple.

>>
>>56238837
It is objectively the tactile switch with the worst tactile feedback. Tactile feedback is objectively the reason to pick a tactile switch. Therefore it is the worst tactile switch.

Please name a worse tactile switch if you disagree.

The wasd Code Keyboard seems to meet pretty much all my requirements, in that its minimal design, backlit, and has the switches on the back for configurability, but I've read a lot of concerns about the quality of them. Are the concerns purely about the key caps themselves?
Or are is there a comparable better quality alternative, (also more readily available in the UK/Europe.)

Don't believe this guy. Reds are great for gaymes.
>>
>>56240134
Also this keyboard is great for the $80 I paid. The metal is extremely pleasant.
>>
>>56239391
Right, choosing a drink based on alcohol percentage is irrational. So we need to ignore it to get a better result.

The problem with applying this reasoning to browns is that ignoring the tactile feedback makes it almost identical to reds - except reds are easier to tap quickly and are easier to find for cheap. There's a reason why it says "worst tactile switch" instead of "worst switch".

Why would any rational person pick a tactile switch if not for the tactile feedback? (Outside a situation where the specific keyboard they want is cheaper with tactile switches for some reason)
>>
I recently ordered a KBParadise Mini V60 mit Gateron Green. What's the opinion on the board and the switches? Currently using a poker 3 with cherry MX clears. I am quite happy, use it for programming and gaming. But i really want to know how the gateron greens will feel.
>>
>>56240188
>Why would any rational person pick a tactile switch if not for the tactile feedback?
Anybody who does this didn't do their research.
>>
>>56240245
The board has good base specs - a great 60% for the price. If you want to spend money on it later it's easy to find keycaps, cables and cases for it.

Gateron Green is a heavy and clicky switch so be prepared for some clacking. It's going to be louder and slightly harder to press than your Cherry MX Clears. About as close as you can get to buckling spring keyboard without modding switches.
>>
Black switches for fast paced arena shooters, yay or nay? I lift a little and have strong forearms for a nerd.
>>
>>56240821
The keys bounce back up quicker making them more reliable. Once you learn where the actuation point is (and you do have to learn since there's no feedback) you get slightly better control. You can even "ride" the actuation point to generate quick key presses since linears don't need as much distance to reset.

Does this mean I should get a red switch? I have a blue switch keyboard and love the feel, but hate the loudness. I currently use a black switch which I love the quietness, but I fatigue after 3+ hours worth of typing/playing video games. I primarily play RTS/Dota 2/FPS so was on the fence on getting either Brown or Red Switch.

downsides: cheaper plastic in case and caps, worse quality control (burrs on edges, odd patterns)

upside: no broken rivets, no converters needed, more color selection

I'd personally pick between a model F AT/122 and one of these. Those don't have the rivet issues and cost about the same as a Unicomp.
>>
>>56242921
Sounds like red may be for you. If you don't mind the linear feel (I like both linear and tactile switches), and you want something lighter, then reds should be right up your alley.

Olivetti L1, used to be hooked up to a mainframe or something of the sort of the national rail company here.
>>
>>56247107
The pok3r would fulfill your criteria, but I wouldn't really recommend it. The case is spray painted, and the keycaps are laser etched, so you'll want to replace them both eventually, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a metal case and PBT keycaps in stock form in the first place.

well, shipping shouldn't take more than three weeks with the economy package.

It's just that you'll have to pay an everloving fuckton just for the shipping. I wouldn't mind at all selling this to someone who could make some proper use of it, but you'd also have to find a way to make it work with your computer (it has a serial port on the back).

But, if you're actually interested, drop me an email at [email protected]

I was running low on black switches, and somehow having a black on my thumb felt a bit too heavy for my tastes.

Though admittedly, the blacks generally felt a bit heavy for the first two hours of using them. I used clears for half a year, but I've been using 45g Topre for more than half a year by now, so I had to get used to heavier switches again.

Looking forward to the tada68 with gateron clears to come in, especially since my magicforce firmware is fucked (and I can't be bothered to fix it, I'll just use the teensy to finish this other keyboard I've been working on since ages).

I did at first, but even then it was just more important to me to have the mouse that much closer to my centerline.

Time passed and now I can easily touch type numbers from the homerow. I don't do data entry, so I don't really care at all about the missing numpad anymore. Unless I fire up something like Dwarf Fortress that relies on it, in which case I just use my separate USB numpad.

All I need is a buckling spring 10-keyless keyboard.

I fell for the brown switches meme

I dont like how it feels, I think il go for blue switches.

whats your switch of choice?
>>
>>56250683
Cherry Blues, but I honestly don't mind Browns. Better than reds any day. Reds are awful switches.

I've yet to try any of the rarer switches out there, like Cherry Greens, clears or even buckling springs. I've tried Alps before, and they are OK. Not the best, but OK.
>>
>>56250762
>Reds are awful switches
why?
>>
>>56250525
Basically the same as rubber dome, with a click and takes a bit more force. Otherwise, CM has the MX-compat stem, meaning that almost any artisan keycaps or keysets will work with the keyboard.
>>
>>56250780
that doesn't answer my question
>>
>>56250775
Personally, I prefer the tactile response, even if it isn't clicky.

It's all personal preference, but I have a strong dislike towards them as most suppliers in the UK stock either Reds or Browns. You usually have to go out of your way to get Blues, which is a pain.
>>
>>56250789
Well, it's up to you to find out if it is any good - it is personal preference.

I, personally, would prefer something a bit nicer, such as Browns or Blues, or even some clicky Alps.

blues are really good but really loud. If sound isn't a problem for you, go for it, they're great feeling switches. I personally own reds and clears and they each have their merits. Maybe buy one and paint it? You'd have much more choice, and you could have it any way you liked i.e. different shades, finishes etc.

Painting is really easy. You just need to get yourself sandpaper, spray paint (possibly with primer) and maybe topcoat. It doesn't take long at all.

Hallo /mkg/
UK Model M keyboards have a "ground wire" attached to the spacebar - the spacebar plastic is apparently conductive and the other end of the wire is connected to the innards of the keyboard.
As far as the internet tells me, this is supposed to eliminate static electricity by connecting your fingers with the metal innards of the keyboard frequently.
Is this true?
Would removing the wire lead to a dangerous buildup of static electricity?
Could not removing it be dangerous as well?
in pic related you can see the detached wire (I'm not talking about the stabiliser)

Oh well, I just ordered the non-RGB one since I wanted a dark backplate anyway.

Can someone explain the Gundam keycap thing? They're all really ugly and look cheaply made for the most part, but still a ton of people use 1-4 of them
>>
>>56262384
reddit and geekhack is the explanation. people just can't stop spending their money on dumb shit

Is a Gateway2000 keyboard (1994) worth getting?

It has all the goodies & spiral cord, but use rubber dome. all for $7.
>>
>>56262542
nah gateway domes aren't anything special, just another membrane keyboard
>>
>>56262619
Okay, stress over. It was the only keyboard hidden under a bunch of other old keyboards and was shrink wrapped like it was special. I already have a Dell memeboard so no sweat.
>>
>>56256482
hmm that's really interesting. The spacebar is definitely not conductive. Its plastic so even if they added a conductive material it would still have a high resistance. I'd like to see a different pic but my best guess is that that copper is a grounding electrode which lays flat on the metal plate. I can't see why they would have it vertical like that.

Gateron technically makes zealios, which are better than clears.

what the the best doubleshot PBT caps that re black with white legends?
>>
>>56263634
as far as I know only one Taiwanese company makes doubleshot PBT caps and everyone just buys from them and puts their brand on it.

Does ducky use plate mounted or PCB mounted switches on their ducky one keyboards?
>>
>>56263723
just about any keyboard will have plate mounted switches, you'll be hard pressed to find PCB mounted keyboards.

Ok /mkg/, I said in a previous post I risked ordering a Ruyiniao K-26 chink keyboard. Well it arrived today, and I noticed the Esc key had come off during shipping...

Needless to say, already requested a refund.

If it uses a cloned cherry switches you can just buy and individual switch and place it on there
>>
>>56264418

Look again, it's a fucking rubber dome.

Yes, they are key housings shaped like cherry switches.

Should I get a Thermaltake Poseidon Z or a Zalman K900M? Looking for a cheap full size backlit keyboard so recommendations would be sweet too
>>
>>56266336
neither, get a magicforce 108 with gaterons instead of that kailh gaymer nonsense
>>
>>56266336
what switches you want?
>>
>>56266336
If you want cheap try this: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1934

If you want something better try this https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1934

If you want to pay a bit more but get a very good keyboard try any board made by ducky

>>
>>56266539
Topre are literally rubber domes, but better.
Browns are the closest to sort of, but they are shit.
>>
>>56266539
probably a hybrid "mechanical"/dome switch.
Basically its a rubber dome but with a tactile bump. Some even make a clicky noise with their leafs
>>
>>56266565
Even if we're talking "flat" membranes, such as laptop keyboards? Anyway, thanks for the reply. I've seen Topre being recommended everywhere and although a bit expensive I guess they might be worth the price.
>>
>>56266371
Preferably blues, gonna be typing and not gayman

>>56266371
These both look good, will check them out, my issue with ducky is that the cheaper ones don't seem to be backlit and my budget isn't all that high

Do topre to cherry sliders work? And how do they feel?
>>
>>56268225
work in what regard?
allowing you to put your MX keycaps on topre?
in that case yes
there are a few issues with keys that require stabilizers sometimes though
cant speak on how they feel though i assume the same
might be some concern for it being scratchy but you could always lube the slider
>>
What is the cheapest I can buy a hhkb?

capacitive ones are triple to quadruple the price
