So I'm at a career crossroads.
Bachelor's is in MIS, handful of entry level certs(A+/CCNA/MCP/2 MTA's). 5 years technician and 2 years admin experience.
I've always wanted to get into programming, but it's always seemed intimidating and I've never been drawn to a particular language.
Roughly how much time would I have to spend doing self-study and building a portfolio as a programmer before I start matching or exceeding a $50k salary in the midwest US? Or would it be better to just focus on becoming more specialized in the IT side of things?

Lol. Currently in a unionized state gig. Title/salary is non-neg.

you have a STEM degree, 5 years experience and you are dealing with union bullshit while making UNDER $50k?
Did you piss in God's cheerios or something? Or do you just make poor life choices (like asking life advice 4chan)?

I should start my own coding boot camp. I'm a better programmer than most of the people who run them and I bet I can scam just as well as them.

I should invest in Eastern Poland.

Again, rural midwest here. 200+ miles to the nearest metro area. Tech jobs are hard to come by.
Although I did make a pretty shitty life choice staying here as long as I have. Put my life on hold waiting for my GF of four years to finish her master's before we moved. One semester until she graduated , then she was diagnosed with a plethora of mental issues and got hooked on drugs out of nowhere. Fairly recent occurrence and she's not in my life anymore. FML.

if you have a hard on for those kind of places, at least choose somewhere comfy like missoula, montana

Leland says we're going there.
