Get a T430 thinkpad, it is exactly what you are looking for, up to 16gb ram, has 3rd gen i5 (this can be upgraded to i7 if you have the know how), can have dedicated graphics, and has 1600x900 resolution, can be DIYed to 1080p

you can also have a 9 cell battery, and put in a 2nd hdd or ssd if you swap out the dvd drive with an ultrabay adapter
