/SQT/ - Stupid Question Thread

Alright, you know the drill:

Last thread: >>56179608

If you can't be bothered to:
>search it
>lurk moar
>git gud

Then this thread is for you!
Post your simple/stupid questions here, ONCE
You are NOT entitled to an answer.

Please redirect or ignore anybody asking stupid questions outside this thread.

Protip: If you can't tell if your question deserves it's own thread, its very likely it doesn't. Post it here, we'll let you know.

First order of business: what's with this/these faggot(s) posting Small Questions Threads?

Archives indicate that they've been created in their current form since July 1, 2016, and in variations since June 30, 2016.

What fucking gives?
>>
You're an autistic faggot
>>
>>56205891
Also, for the people who care, if creating a new thread with the same name, please try to make sure that you keep the same OP up to, and including, the "Protip:" paragraph.

Hey man, I kept it as close to the original(s) as possible.

Wouldn't have been my choice, but if it's used in the subject, I'll use it in the body.

> If you want to make a new thread to compete, do it when the current one reaches the bump limit and post "new thread". You'll actually stand a chance of getting people in your thread.
If I did that, then the other guy would just make his shitty one again.

Besides, the previous one I linked was created well before the current one hit the bump limit, and it generated replies when the other /sqt/ hit about 254 replies.

I'd rather create this one too early than too late, you know?

TLDR: how do I install linux from dos?

I have an old box with the following:
- floppy drive (+ stack of floppies)
- (IDE) hard drive
- ethernet port
- serial/parralel port (but no cables)
- MS-DOS 6.21

I managed to do some basic file operations through DOS and played in QBASIC a bit.

Now I want to install either debian or a BSD on there. I can put files on the HDD by copying them to floppies but nothing I want to copy fits on a floppy.

what's the easiest way to install linux?
>>
>>56206276
Plug the hard drive into another pc, create a seperate partition on it, put a bootable linux image on there, boot that in your DOS pc, and install on the remaining disk space.

If you can't do what >>56206315 said;

Install the floppy drive into another PC, and put the floppy into the drive and install Puppy Linux onto it - it should be able to fit.

Whip out the floppy, install the drive back into the original PC, the put the floppy back into the drive.

You should be able to do an install after that.

Afterwards, install a disk drive and knock yourself out with installing *BSD!

> Now I want to install either debian or a BSD on there. I can put files on the HDD by copying them to floppies but nothing I want to copy fits on a floppy.

Remote file server is one, and is incredibly useful.

What's the deal, why does SQT mean both Small Questions Thread or Stupid Questions Thread, is this place for Small questions only or Stupid Questions only?

Confusing and annoying as hell. Too scared to post my question in this thread because what if it's too small, or what if it's too stupid, it would have to depend on whichever thread was made at time.

Just pick one and stick with it. Preferably 'stupid', because 'small questions' already sounds stupid. wtf is a small question? Must only can 3 words max? How small is small? You don't know. But stupid? You know immediately if a question is stupid. So it makes more sense for it to be a stupid questions thread.
>>
>>56207678
No. Here's a live system with the tools you'll need.
It's not trivial, it'll take time (especially if you don't know what you're doing), and you're not guaranteed to get anything back.

You fucked your drive cause you thought 2 out of 3 people on /g/ saying "go for it", with only me warning you, was good enough confirmation to do stuff you didn't understand to a working system without a backup.

I have a 1TB external hard drive plugged into a USB hub which is itself plugged into a Raspberry Pi. The drive is currently formatted as btrfs and exported through NFS to various other devices on my network.
I would like to plug a second external drive into my USB hub and have it behave as if the first drive had just been "extended" (meaning that I could just continue to drop files in the folders I'm currently using on the first drive even though it's full). I would also like my second drive to be usable if my first drive was to fail (it's five years old and even though I haven't used it a whole lot I'm afraid it'll die soon).
So far here are the options I've thought of:
- Software level RAID0. I don't like the idea because if the first drive fails I'll lose everything on the second drive too.
- LVM. But would I still be able to retrieve data from the second drive if the first one was to die?
- Btrfs storage pool. From what I read on the internet it's kinda equivalent to doing software raid. Not sure I want to do that.

Go I have any other option? What would you guys recommend?

Anyone ever RMA'd anything with Corsair from the US?

RAM has been acting up, caused crashes more and more often over a few days. 32 GB (2 sticks of 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX)

Rig worked perfectly for 1 month. Then I downloaded a GTX 980 legacy driver to use with my GTX 1070 to help make Batttleborn/Borderlands games run better. Supposedly it helped PhysX run better for newer GPUs like the 1070 and 1080. At first it caused some instability and a couple crashes for the first time when I played Overwatch.

Uninstalled the driver, then it caused more errors. So I uninstalled ALL nvidia drivers which then killed the PC, constant crashes and errors and memory issues and PCI errors. Felt like a virus was attacking my PC. Using Windows 10.

Wiped hard drive, tried to reinstall Windows 8 and upgrade back to 10, but just barely installed Windows 8 successfully after 5 attempts due to memory pool errors and other BSODs. Can't upgrade to Windows 10, just rolls back to 8 when it nears completion and gives me errors. Can't upgrade to Windows 8.1 because Windows Update crashes when just attempting to download updates.

Disconnected my SSD, ran memtest86:
First stick in slot 1 with 4 passes successful
That same stick in another slot can't boot up.
The second stick won't boot up in either the first slot or another slot.

Right now it sounds like both the mobo and RAM are fucked, just from downloading a stupid nvidia driver. wtf am I SOL, can drivers physically damage components? Maybe the driver told the GPU to drain too much power? Why is the RAM acting up only now after I downloaded that nvidia legacy driver? Why weren't there any problems before?

Before you guys tell me it's just the RAM, why doesn't the working stick in slot 1 work in slot 3 as well? If it's just the other stick that was bad, shouldn't the good stick work no matter where I put it? It seems like the driver fucked up my mobo too. How can a single driver incompatibility completely kill my rig?
>>
>>56207917
RAM problems? Run memtest.
>>
>>56207917
Ran out of space, here are the specs:
6700K i7 @ 4.0 GHz
Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH mobo
GTX 1070 EVGA SC
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB RAM (16 GB sticks) 2666 MHz
EVGA Supernova 850 G2 PSU
Samsung EVO 850 SSD 500 GB

How easy is it to RMA something? Is it a pain or have you guys gone through the process without problems? Will I get blamed for something like this and have to pay for a new replacement? How do you prove something is faulty, or was it my fault to begin with?
>>
>>56207981
I did. But from what I found:

Stick 1 works in slot 1 only, not in slot 3 (by itself)
Stick 2 doesn't work in either slot (by itself)
Sticks 1 and 2 together at the same time in slots 1 and 2 both work for a few seconds to a few minutes with Windows 8 running, but comes up with errors in memtest86.

Since stick 1 only works in slot 1, I'm suspecting it's not only the RAM, but the Motherboard as well. I get memory initialization error codes on the Mobo's LED dispaly.

>>56208053
You won't lose data when going from a lossy format to a lossless format. However, the document probably already lost data when it was saved in a lossy format.
>>
>>56207795
Scenario 1: There was data on that drive important enough for you to spend a day (or more) getting it back:
>use the Live CD you used for partitioning
>read up on how to restore data from a partition that was resized
>do that (you can install packages you need into your live environment on most linux live systems)
>you will need a seperate external drive
>if you can get any data back, don't count on it being organized in folders, or still have the original filename. You may literally have to look at each file to see what it is and manually rename it and put it back into a folder structure.
>now back everything up
>partition your drive
>reinstall Windows
>then reinstall Linux
>put your files back on the drive
>no, you can't restore installed software, mail contacts or settings that way

Scenario 2: There wasn't anything that important on that drive.
>reinstall Windows
>then install Linux for a dual boot system
>done

The canvas API enables javascript developpers to easily create pictures, animations and videogames through an HTML object. You can draw pictures wherever you want and shit. It's cool.
The websocket protocol enables you to connect to a server port much like you normally do when using a TCP socket. The websocket enables you to both send and receive messages from the server. It uses TCP as its underlying protocol.

>>
>>56210293
im using all noctua fans, im also using the noctua paste, idk the exact model, its not what came with the heatsink. Just bought what my store had in stock and it was some noctua paste.

I think temps will always run a little high in this system in general, its an old case for a 'sleeper' build so airflow is tentative at best. At the moment I've only got one chassis fan and that's 120mm for intake. I've got room to potentially put 2 80mm for exhaust but I'd like to avoid that, however ive never used 80mm noctua maybe they arent as loud as my past experience with 80mm leads me to believe.

I think my issue is lack of airflow through the case, seems to get to about 58c on the cpu and 73c on the gpu then just sit there, after 30min at least...
I might run it for an hour or 2 and see if it keeps climbing or if it stays around there.

Boot times, application load times, file save/load/transfer.

Literally everything you use your pc for that isnt calculation heavy (rendering, gaming, calculation) is going to be improved..

If you have a slow device with more than 4gig ram an SSD is the number 1 upgrade to improve how it feels to use. If you are on the fence just do it, it's worth it, you will never go back to HDDs for the OS

A core is like an independent CPU. Back in the day they used to sell mobos with more than one cpu slot for servers and overpowered computers. Then they got good at integrating them together. These days most computer's have more than one core, and that helps get around some of the limitations in processor capacity. When you talk about a processor with twice as many threads as cores, that's hyperthreading, and it's a way of trying to get two cores for the price of one by sharing some resources between them. It works better for some programs than others. Your computer can try to distribute the jobs it needs done across all your cores, but some programs are not very good at using more than one or two, especially games. But as time goes on people get better at coding for more cores. L2 cache is like a tiny, expensive, ultra fast little blob of memory that's part of the processor. More is better, but it's usually not something you need to worry about.

Whenever I boot from the flash drive I get a blue screen saying UNetbootin on it. I'm guessing that this happens because I haven't formatted my sdd and that linux is trying to stop me from installing W10 over it? If that is the case. How can I format my sdd if I don't have a disk installer and have to use my flashdrive to install windows 10?

Now, I'm trying to install the iso to my flash drive using winusb and it's stuck on a 'Installing for i386-pc platform.'

I've tried chatting with windows tech support two times now and it's been pointless and I'm seriously desperate bc I have a lot of school work due that i need windows to do .

A thread is what you get when you run an application. The application is a bunch of CPU instructions (machine code), and the CPU will execute the instructions in sequence.

If you run two applications, you get two threads, and the cpu will switch between them, executing a couple of instructions at a time.

If you have hyperthreading, the CPU will notice when it can execute instructions from different threads at the same time, i.e. when they use different hardware.

If you have multiple cores, the CPU simply has multiples of the hardware needed to execute the instructions, so you can execute multiple threads without having to switch between the two.

It seems nice but when two threads need to work together, only three-star programmers can make it run fast&flawless, and there's not enough of those programmers, so multithreaded programs are usually slow, broken or both.

Cache, at any 'l', is like RAM on steroids. The l1 cache is on more steroids than l2. Get as much cache as you can if you want to go fast. However: If you're a security researcher or otherwise worried about microsecond-scale timing attacks, get a CPU and OS _without_ caches.

There is no specific BIOS option to boot from USB.
The USB controller is enabled and so is USB Legacy Support.

The boot order setting doesn't even list my USB stick whatsoever. It just lists my other stuff like hard drives etc.

CPUs without caches are not a thing anymore. Sometimes a BIOS may be able disable the CPU cache though.

It does introduce huge lag, you really really want caches.

The problem is that a bunch of crypto algos aren't well-designed regarding caches. This means that if an attacker can accurately measure how long their attack takes, they may break your previous encryption.

It's an attack at you're-already-pwned-anyway level, but it stirred up some dust in recent years.

Try going to view and unchecking "auto resize guest display" and then setting it manually in Virtual screen 1. Then maybe restart if it doesn't take effect right away. If I had to guess I'd say the guest additions don't play as well with XP.

weird question but I got a philips 242g5 monitor (I know its not great but I got it for cheap in an ebay auction, and I wanted 144hz) but when its on 120/144hz I got these weird horizontal lines moving vertically on the monitor, like scan lines in some other monitors. My lubuntu (installed on a raspberry clone) keeps trying to mount a certain partition which isn't being used. I checked out /etc/fstab, it shouldn't be mounted on it's own at all.
After unmounting, after a few seconds it keeps gettings mounted again by the "mount.ntfs" proccess.
lsof / fuser doesn't show anyone using the path being mounted.
syslog just logs the mounting itself, not what causes it.

Any ideas how I can attempt to debug this?

I've looked everywhere, and I wasn't able to find a solid answer. I remember reading that LGA 775 motherboards could be modified to accept LGA 771 Xeons, which would effectively make them cheaper C2Quads with the same performance. However, OEM PCs like Dell and the like have far more limited motherboards, and I wasn't able to find anything specific regarding this particular PC I found, an Optiplex 745. I was able to find one for the 755, and they were apparently able to stick a Xeon 3363 in there.

So my question here is: Should I bother with the 3633, or should I just get a Q6600 instead? Like I said, I wasn't able to find any custom BIOSes for the Optiplex 745, only for the 755, and I have no idea if the two are similar. I'm able to find a Q6600 for 15 bucks, or a 3363 for 25, so I just wanna see what /g/ thinks. I'm thinking about giving this PC off to my nephew, to play Miney Crafta and other toasterware on it. Thanks in advance.

How would I go about blending multiple transparent textures in a single shader pass? Or would there not be that much overhead if I just made like 4 draw calls to the same shader just blending one layer at a time. I know I can just add blending code to the shader and I know how to do that or would that create too much overhead too since I wouldn't be using glBlendFunc.

My university gives every student a convertible tablet PC for personal and school use. Its actually not that bad for taking notes but the piece of shit will not orient correctly. When in tablet mode (portrait) it sometimes flips upside down for no apparent reason. I suspect the accelerometer is a cheap POS. The rotation lock built into win10 always locks the screen upside down instead of right side up, making me unlock the screen, shake the computer around until it orients the right way, and relock the screen. It's becoming a very big annoyance for me. Is there any way I can force the computer to only orient in specific directions?

I have a big case fan in the roof of my PC case that has started to make a weird clicking/rattling sound recently. There's a dial on the case that lets me adjust the speed of the fan, which changes the rattling noise, however neither HWmonitor or speedfan notice any difference in terms of RPM (maybe they can't even detect that fan?).

I assume the fan is dying, because I have check that it's not hitting against anything, I can manually turn the fan without noise. It only starts clicking at higher RPMs, and only sometimes (if I speed it up then slow it down it might stop making noise for a while etc.).

Can I just disconnect it and leave it be? I mean it's only a case fan... Because finding an exact replacement would be difficult right? Or are there standardized sizes for case fans? I can't remember the exact name of the case so I'll have to go looking for that...

FFmpeg question

I have a video file with a video track and an audio track and I want to add a song on top of that. I want the output file to have a single video track and a single audio track. In the audio track you must be able to listen to both the original audio and the song. I also want to be able to control the volume of the song or the original audio, or both of them.

ffmpeg -i "video.webm" -i "song.mp3" ^
-filter_complex "[0:a][1:a]amerge=inputs=2[a]" -map 0:v -map "[a]" ^
-c:v copy -c:a libvorbis -qscale:a 0 -ac 2 -shortest -y output.webm

That does what I want except for the volume part I can't seem to be able to control the volume of either the original audio or the song I'm adding in. I've tried asking Google, but none of the thing I found have worked so far.
