lets put aside the overall power of apple products for a moment, because I'm sure there's no shortage of dorklords who will scream the hard numbers fall short of whatever the latest and greatest is right now, and focus on "build quality". basically, apple has complete control over their supply chain. as in, they fronted the money to build the factories that build the components in their products. that, coupled with an army of in-house engineers, they can design a chipset from scratch, put it in a sleek aluminum case, then manufacture 20 million of them. AND they make the software that runs it all. end result is a solidly built, unified product that "just werks".

most competitors are grabbing parts off the shelf like they're at Fry's and cramming them into whatever plastic box an intern sketched up over the weekend that passes FCC, then dumping windows/android on it
