What does /g/ think of chromebooks? I'm considering getting one as a new shitposting/programming machine as I don't feel like my x61 is cutting it anymore.
I've been looking at the Acer 14. Looks like a good price, with a nice display and dat sexy aluminum construction. I've always been of the opinion that acer is a garbage brand but this thing has some pretty stellar reviews so maybe their chromebooks are better than their laptops.
Good idea, bad idea? What do you guys think of chromebooks?

They're alright when you install a different Linux distribution and add an SD card. Cost effective, at least, assuming you don't get the $1200 memebook.

This. Normies get a $2000 all-purpose facebook machine but custom built rig + sub-$300 laptop with your own distro is pretty ideal if you have an ounce of tech competence.

install cloudready
basically turns anything into a chromebook

only good when hackintoshed

The only issue with this model is that it doesn't have an SD card slot which seems pretty dumb for a chromebook. It's not too big of a problem for me thoug because the x61 I've been using the last couple years just has a 64gb ssd in it and I don't think I've ever even gone over 15 on it. My main concerns with a chromebook would be a shit display and garbage build quality and this one seems good on those fronts.

Seamless transition between chrome and a linux distro is pretty tight. That and incredible battery life is what I miss using my Thinkpad.
On the otherhand, the only chromebook that's worth it is the Pixel, just due to non-battery life specs + screen real estate. At that price, it's only worth it if you have that cash to burn, otherwise a cheap thinkpad is better

Tosh CB2 i3 with upgraded mSSD is objectively the best value chromebook.
Add Gallium / other distro and you're set

If you wipe BotnetOS off of it and just install a real linux distro, they can be good values. I'm pretty happy with my 1st gen Toshiba Chromebook 2. I got it for around $140, and it is a solid little machine.

Literally the best piece of tech I've ever bought for less than a grand. Aluminum, decent screen, great battery life, decent keyboard and trackpad, fanless, comfy as fuck running ChromeOS/Crouton, or Gallium.
The only thing you could ask for above and beyond this is another Pixel which would run you 5x the price.

That's good to hear. How is it performance wise? How many tabs of HD streaming porn can I open before it starts to chug?
