GTX 1060m is more powerful than a PS4 Neo as Pascal technology enables laptop GPUs now be on par with their desktop equivalents.

Sony are finished and gaming laptops are now a real thing.

Not PlayStation
>gaming laptops are now a real thing
They've always been and always will be niche
>>

>You need water cooling to run it without bottleneck
Yea, Good one.
>>
>>56173198
Thanks, Mr. Nvidia Marketing Agent
>>
>>56173198
>GTX 1060m
>laptop GPUs
There's no M. It's not a "laptop" GPU. It's just a GTX 1060, straight up. It's the same chip as you see on the desktop graphics cards.
>>
>>56173198
I don't want my laptop to overheat and reduce lifespan of components.
>>
>>56173221
Prices are dropping and they're gaining popularity.
My friends sister upgraded from a 2012 macbook pro to a 15 inch alienware because she does a lot of editing and shit for ad companies.

>he fell for nvidia marketing
>>
>>56173335
>same amount of CUDA cores, with the exception of 1070 where the laptop variant has more CUDA cores
>same amount of VRAM bandwidth
>same amount of VRAM
It's not even marketing. It's right there in the spec sheets.
With the exception of GTX 1070, Pascal uses the same chips in both desktops and laptops.
>>
>>56173198
It also costs as much as PS4 on its own, so who gives a shit?
>>
>>56173384
>lower clocks
and also, >muh same chip
maxwell laptop used the same damn chip as the desktop with different floorsweep, it's not a new thing you dumb fuck
>>
>>56173198
Use gtx1080, that's all
>>
>>56173400
Running 50 MHz slower doesn't make it physically a different chip, you dumb fuck.
I can underclock my desktop GPU too, but that doesn't make it a different GPU.

yeah man!

except that $800+ pricetag
>>
>>56173418
i didn't say it wasn't a different chip, i said that mobile GPUs were always the same chip as the desktop chip, can you even read?
and also, you really think you can get the laptop power/budget with just 50MHz of clock reduction? Just crazy.
>>
>>56173450
>you really think you can get the laptop power/budget with just 50MHz of clock reduction?
That and binning for higher ASIC quality. Have you even looked at the specs for the Pascal lineup ?

The laptop variant of GTX 1080 literally only runs 50 MHz slower than desktop reference, this being the -only- difference in specs between the laptop and desktop variants. That's it. 50 MHz difference in base clock speed, nothing else. Everything else is the same.
>>
>>56173400
Not that guy but why shit on Nvidia for this when AMD can't even compete?

They already own 90% of the laptop GPU market so they could have easily jewed out and just made the 1000m series 10% faster than maxwell. Instead they pretty much doubled performance and made their entire line of maxwell chips obselete in a single day, that's some shit we haven't seen since P4 to core2 by Intel, only this time AMD isn't even around to push them on.

>>56173428
I'm hoping 1060 laptops drop on black friday, that or I'll get it after xmas or something

How was it there? And what is your general opinion about nVidia vs AMD?
>>
>>56173562
i came in as a diehard amd fan. i have an amd gpu. i still am not a full nvidia fanboy, but i'm definitely impressed at the company seeing the engineers. very passionate and smart people there.

the campus is pretty, i'll say that. it looks like any .com company inside, but the lawn and the buildings are really nice.
the food was great. everyone hates on it because it's cool to hate on cafeteria food but the meat at the rotisserie place was really nice.

it was amazing to see the "inside perspective" as a gamer, getting to know all the cool details in the driver that will never go out to the public. the company is barreling down the deep learning hype train and some of the internal research i got to take a peek at was amazing.

one thing i noted was not a lot of people there are gamers. one of my mentors was super into dota 2, and my other mentor used to be a gamer but he kinda slowed down on the gaming because of his family and work.

nvidia is building a new building and it should be done in a few months; i am not sure if i'll go back, but i'd definitely love to considering that building looks fucking awesome

and about nvidia vs. amd, it's quite sad really. i like to root for the underdog but amd's software is just... bad. if you look at the raw FLOPs, amd's equivalent GPUs' are higher (look at 290 vs. 970 for instance), but their software is shitty so the perf is about the same.

ok, nothing i said should be confidential
>>
>>56173634
oh yeah, i got to meet jensen

dude's a pretty chill guy, got to sit in his ferrari lmao
>>
>>56173634
Last question now.

what do you think about the 3.5GB issue on the GTX 970, was it planned or not? I own the card though and im pretty satisfied with its performance.
>>

>>
>>56173681
i'm pretty sure it's not confidential, but i'll be on the safe side: i can't say.
>>
>>56173198
Wow, are you telling me that a just released GPU is stronger than the GPU on a 3 years old machine that cost about the same?

NO WAY!!!
>>
>>56173696
Alright, i can respect that. Thanks anyway.

Oh and as an nVidia owner i was a little hyped when amd announced their RX 480 but when it launched i was dissapointed.
>>
>>56173264

It cannot ever have the same power budget without severe thermal issues.

Cooling requirements don't magically disappear when you put it in a laptop f.am
>>
>>56173723
yeah, i just bought a freesync monitor so i'm kinda stuck with amd at the moment. hopefully they launch with a good 490.

i was hoping i'd win a 1070 or 1080 in a raffle but i got rekt.

man, i miss the place. one dollar dinners :^)
>>
>>56173731
Why do you think there are no thin and light laptops with GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 ?

Wow maybe it's because manufacturers are aware that these GPUs require large heatsinks
who would have thought ?

Haven't taken your ADD meds yet?

"The biggest and most painful question about all of this then is how did this happen? How did we get fed incorrect specifications? NVIDIA’s explanation, in a nutshell, is that this was completely accidental and that all of this stems from assumptions made by NVIDIA’s technical marketing team."

"The error, as NVIDIA explains it, is that in creating the GTX 970 reviewer’s guide, the technical marketing team was unaware of Maxwell’s aforementioned and new “partial disable” capabilities when they filled out the GTX 970 specification table. They were aware that the GTX 970 would have the full 256-bit memory bus, and unaware of the ability to independently disable ROPs they assumed that all 64 ROPs and the full 2MB of L2 cache was similarly available and wrote the specification table accordingly. This error then made it into the final copy of the guide, not getting caught even after being shared around various groups at NVIDIA, with that information finally diffused by press such as ourselves."

"Now as NVIDIA is in full damage control mode at this point, consideration must be given as to whether NVIDIA’s story is at all true; NVIDIA would hardly be the first company to lie when painted into a corner by controversy. With that in mind, given the story that NVIDIA has provided, do we believe them? In short, yes we do."
>>
>>56173198

I'm living in a trailer for the foreseeable future and can't use something that takes a ton of power/room, so my custom build is getting sold. What are the best gaming laptops? Can I get a good one for under 1.2k? Doesn't have to run the most recent games at high, 120hz screen is needed though.
>>
>>56173914
hopefully you're still there.
>>56174010

looks like it is public.

https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2015/02/24/gtx-970/

from what i've heard inside nvidia, what jensen is saying here is completely true. there was a miscommunication between the hardware guys and the technical marketing team and this crucial bit of info got kinda ignored.

so yes, it wasn't accidental and nvidia wasn't out to screw you guys.
>>
>>56174067
I'm here.

Thoughts on AMD's stock skyrocketing? I made some money on it but am now in Nvidia as a long hold. Do you think that's smart and do you see Nvidia expanding it's appeal to consumers?

I think AMD will go up with 480 sales but I don't see them beating NVDA in the long term.

Probably more like equal to Neo/Scorpio. 1060 is approximately equal to 480 if paired with low level APIs (console, DX12), and the new consoles will approximately have a 480 if not a higher SP part. On top of that consoles get a little more oomph than PC
