Capitalism is built on unlimited growth.

Too much automation will require more and more welfare, which will limit that growth and even negate it.
It has to be kept within a certain percentage to be maintainable.
Some jobs can and do die, but other jobs are usually created as a result.
Doing this too quickly will actually be detrimental as you kill off too many jobs and leave a huge group of people unable to work.

Although, humans as a species are lucky at this present time because we are already beginning space mining missions.
There has been active research in space for platforms and scouting satellites.
Within 50 years, we will start to see the benefits of this space mining at the society level.
100 years in, everything could be automated because we will have the resources for "infinite" growth.

The brain doesn't work like that. It is massively parallel and complex behaviour comes about from said parallel structure.
Complex behaviour is a massive calculation of multiple facets that eventually lead to a "winning" behaviour, which is what ends up being expressed as muscle movements, or whatever else.

Computers won't get to the complexity of brains until we get rid of the concept of single-threadedness.
The brain certainly doesn't operate like that.

Of course, saying the brain is the absolute best a computational device can be is hilarious.
The brain is a horrible construct. It is limited by evolution and environment. It is horribly fucking redundant, and its plasticity is only really an advantage in the wild. Software plasticity is far superior.

Computers CAN go well above and beyond what brains are capable of.

But you will not find many mom and pop shops with automated workforces. At least, not often. By then the big box stores would have utterly wiped out downtown businesses and this thing people call "small business."

It should be noted that we don't have a human population problem. We aren't overpopulated. The issue with human population is distributing food, water and services. The only reason that we have a distribution problem is the fact that ending world hunger would not be profitable. Just in the same sense that avoiding automation would not be profitable. Similar to how millions of tonnes of ""excess"" food rot each week, many bottom-feeding humans will rot in an automated society.

But the question that I ask myself is whether or not Capitalism will survive long enough to achieve total automation of the workforce. The fact is, this economic system is built off the assumption that there are unlimited resources. But we live on a planet with finite resources and here we are throwing phones into the dump with gold, copper, and plastic components. The amount of arable land is decreasing too with increased droughts and with water levels rising.

My job could technically be automated to a certain extent (skilled trade, it really doesn't matter which one its applicable for all), but every machine would still need an operator present for a variety of reasons mostly related to safety. I actually welcome it as much as possible for this very reason, I'll just get paid more to do less, with increased production being the payoff for the company.

I still don't think total automation will be feasible for a variety of skilled trades for an extremely long time.
