The internet is (was) supposed to be an open place where people of different opinions, beliefs, tastes, fetishes, etc, could go to share their world views. Easily reflected through things like BBS, usenet, IRC, and later geocities, angelfire, 50webs, all the old versions of still living internet communities, etc. People have always been crazy on the internet and that's what's been great about it; some interactions/places aren't pleasant, but they're incredibly unique. I doubt shekelstein is old enough to remember or at the very least proactive enough to learn about them.

I do agree that your average normie however would tend to blow a relatively minor insult incident out of order or otherwise needlessly continue to expose themselves to such harassment which is the real issue.
