That's because pretty much most modern dvi ports don't support the analogue signal used by vga.

DP -> VGA would be the best option.

What is your monitor resolution? If it is fullHD forget about any sort of passive/active converters, the image quality will be absolutely shit. The converters are more geared toward connecting stuff to VGA projectors not for a poorfag with higher resolution display.
