I've never heard of someone doing that, but in hindsight, that isn't a bad idea at all. If you boot Ubuntu as live disc, you can install while even having a gui webbrowser. It does add complications though.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend that as it clearly is your first or second time, and you will have an easier time with the gentoo install media
