I need a new external hard drive for backups. What brands/models have the best data integrity and I/O speeds for the money?
probably looking for a 2-5tb drive.
thanks anon

WD. Always WD.
>>56131235
Western Digital, Sandisk, Ot if you aren't broke, and it doesn't need to be super portable, get a NAS grade Western Digital SAS disk, slow speed, and build your own external HDD

the anons are right, WD is a good choice - see the passport series
Hitachi HGST/WD
Stay away from all 3TBs besides Hitachi

I've had several WD drives die on me, personally. Fantom has always served me well.

static electricity can kill any electronics, check your setup if you keep having these

Don't listen to all the WD shills, seagate and toshiba drives are better and often cost less. Hitachi/HGST drives are also good but usually cost a little more.

Hitachi

the contrarian is awake. still, not too many reasons given why others are "better"
personally, in the last 20 years (so long since 1996 already) I used WD, not by plan but by chance intially, but after the first 10 years and seeing friends losing their "major brand" HDDs, kept on going and did not have any issue.
average usage lifetime 5 years for every HDD, after which they were upgraded due to size limitations
so, when recommending something, please share some reasons at least

>seagate
>better than WD
kek
>backing up to HDD
Fuck that lol.
I back my shit up to SSD with rsync.
It will be too slow and you will just stop doing it.

Check out backblazes hard drive tests, seagates have a much lower failure percentage.

interesting, still this is datacenter conditions, constant temperature, humidity, low power on/of cycle count (mentioned as 25 times) etc
real life power on/off count, shakes and tremblings would change the results drastically.

Listen to FPBP, second being Toshiba
Seagate a shit, SHIT
>>56132887
What? What sort of fucked up brain do you have that you see that result?
Seagates were all the worst.
The "hours in service" is literally meaningless because they get those drives most often because other drives were harder to get in bulk.
