Why is /g/ so obsessed with botnets and privacy?

Don't you know that you lose your privacy the moment you start using the internet?
Don't you know your gps is always on in your phone as a safety feature?

Unless you disconnect yourself from the world, there's no escape.

I just don't understand the "muh botnet" meme.
If the government wanted to know what you were doing, they're gonna know. Regardless of what OS you run, what browser and services you use. As long as you're not a pedo, terrorist, or doing something obviously illegal on a large scale, they don't give a flying fuck about you.

All you "muh botnet" faggots need to realize there are more interesting people to surveil than people on this board

I'm just worried about my drugs, okay, I know it's degenerate but it's still technically illegal here. I'm not harming anyone else but me. JUST LET ME BE

This is demonstrably false. How are known terrorists able to evade detection if the government instantly knows what they are doing?

It's because encryption actually works, and the government doesn't have some secret team that are smarter than all of the IT industry combined. You are giving them way too much credit.
>>
Killed my GPS antenna an the first day. I know my position can still be triangulated via mobile network, but it's less precise and a 50m search radius can make a big difference compared to a more or less precise point on a map.

I'm aware that most/all http/https traffic is monitored, stored and processed. Hardware backdoors have been implemented into Intel cpus over a decade ago.

US companies are compromised by default, lots of FOSS/etc is getting "improved" by NSA staff/contractors.

I also know about things like guessing hashing/encryption shit by monitoring the exact power consumption, reconstructing data from the sounds a hdd makes, wireless bugs in cables and so on.

If anyone of the big players would want to fuck me up, I'd be fucked.

But here's the thing: Just because someone, somewhere COULD look up everything there is to know about me, I don't want every fucker who's got a badge or an internship at Google to be able to look up my point habits or what I buy when, where, for which price.

If you're not in the US (or one of the few Arabic shitholes where this also applies) no one's giving a shit about drugs. As long as you wipe chat history on all your devices you're fine, since that's what police could look up if they're looking into you for drug stuff (assuming you're only a consumer who's maybe supplying a few friends. When serious money is involved, you're fucked)

Avoiding american botnet is actually easy, but then you have to give in to russian or chinese botnet.
Unless you are building your own hardware (I mean literally building your own cpu from logic gates), you have backdoors in every piece of hardware made post 2001.
>>
>>56123447
You guys really don't get it... It's about creating presedents. What if in 10 yrs your political regime is opressive? Google'd the wrong word? Execution time! Just a more extreme example. Having corporations and governements looking into your personality is a VERY bad idea. Maybe not today, but i'm telling you, your grandchildren will curse you! You lazy fuckers should be on the bloody barricades.

>Don't you know that you lose your privacy the moment you start using the internet?
Privacy is a sliding scale, not an either-or you have it absolutely or you have none at all sort of deal. Sure, I'll never have perfect absolute privacy without structuring my whole life around security like Ed Snowden has to. But I want, and can have fairly easily, a lot more than "none", and I think that's definitely worthwhile.

>>56123447
>If the government wanted to know what you were doing, they're gonna know.
>All you "muh botnet" faggots need to realize there are more interesting people to surveil than people on this board
Three-letter agencies much prefer to do what's easy. Sure, they have powerful surveillance tools, but those require having a target, and devoting expensive, trained people to attack that target. Know what's much easier and cheaper? Calling Google, or tapping into their systems once, and then having access to their huge database of people and everything they do online. And that passive, untargeted, dragnet surveillance is much easier to defeat than a targeted search by a nation-state adversary interested in you specifically.

And I'd want to do it anyway because I don't like the idea of a big company having a database of everything I do for the purpose of bombarding me with ads. Even if that company didn't share any of that information with governments.

>Because, it's called privacy for a reason

Don't you know that you lose your privacy the moment you start using the internet?
>No I do not, I use gentoo and proxies

Don't you know your gps is always on in your phone as a safety feature?
>I don't have a cell phone, sorry

Unless you disconnect yourself from the world, there's no escape.
>That's exactly what I did, thanks for the heads up

Seriously, I wanted a private life, I enjoy my privacy.
I had the misfortune of growing up before the internet was 'big'
yet during that time of growing up I paid close attention to how the
world was changing.

I didn't like it, so I did what I could to be off the grid, for the most part.

No, it's because they aren't even fucking using the internet, never mind encryption.

It is trivial as fuck to create keywords that are literally sentences that tells Ahmed McTerrorist to blow himself up or whatever other stupid shit they do.

NO amount of intelligence will ever be able to detect that without total context of these peoples lives. (which they won't have because not everyone uses the internet, phones and the like)

Encryption is a fucking scapegoat for mass surveillance and nothing else.

Imagine waking up one day and discovering twelve men building a wall on your property line. You go outside and ask them what they are doing and they inform you that they are being paid by your local government to construct a wall around your property.

You call a lawyer and after a brief investigation, the lawyer you hired informs you that your local government used eminent domain to seize a small track of land surrounding everyone's property line and that there is nothing you can legally do to stop the 100 men currently building a wall around your property because the seizure and construction of the wall have been authorized by new emergency anti-terrorism legislation.

So there you are, waking up every day and looking out your window to watch the government slowly imprison you on your own property and there is nothing you can legally do about it. You are expected by everyone in your community to just accept it. Your neighbors are thrilled that they are getting a free wall and are convinced the wall is going to make them safe. When you complain to others in your community that the wall being constructed will mean the end of everyone's freedom and liberty, they laugh at you and mock you and call you nuts.

You're the only one in your neighborhood who can foresee the true nature of what the wall really represents.

Well, why is the government concerned about it's citizens viewing it's confidential/secret files? Matter of national security? It's a two way street.

Businesses have a lot of confidential information regarding business management and policies as well as research and development that's extremely sensitive and revealing it can be extremely damaging.

This same principle should be applied to individuals too. I know none of you will read this comment because you're all 12 year old redditors and the mods are fascist censorship cucks.

Underrated post.

Also, people who say "Hurr just don't do anything illegal" fail to see that the government can pretty much arbitrarily decide that you should be put on a watch list. For example, I went on a holiday trip to the United States last year. Before that, I had to fill out a ton of information about myself to get admitted to traveling. Who's to say they don't want even more information about me to make sure I'm a friendly tourist?
