If you don't know what it is, it is the 15TB drive from samsung

>>
>>56120814
What HBA/RAID card do you have
>>
>>56120830

I don't do RAID, because I can't afford it. I have 18TB of *actual data* in JBOD, across 6 disks. Not only would I have to pay for another 20TB worth of HDDs, but I'd also have to pull 12 SATA ports out of my ass somehow. It's outrageously expensive.

Now, if I had six free 15TB SSDs on my hands, admittedly, I might be able to make something happen.

How do you have 6 disks connected to a 4 port controller? Do you actually have a chassis with a 12gig expander?
>>
>>56120875

I didn't go JBOD because I'm retarded, I went JBOD because it would have been hilariously expensive.

I'd need a new case, because my current case only supports 6 drives. I'd need a new motherboard (or several expensive SATA cards) to get 12 SATA ports. I'd probably need a new PSU to deal with all the extra SATA connections. If we're being honest, I'd probably want to do this right with ZFS, which would mean having 32-64GB of RAM, which, in addition to costing a fortune in and of itself, would also push up the cost of my new motherboard. I'd need a new processor, to go with the new motherboard. And then, after all that horse shit, I'd need the drives themselves. 20TB worth of drives, which comes to about $1000 *minimum*.

I'd love to do it, but it just isn't realistic.

How am I stupid, rather than just poor? If I can't afford 40TB of raw space, 32 GB of RAM, and RAID cards, I'm just poor. 10 of those would only hold around 3000 uncompressed blurays which isn't a lot really. My libraries rent blurays for free so ripping all of them would be a start.

4/8k video would fill that pretty quick same with high speed camera footage.

HD Survelence footage needs a lot of space

>I have 18 TB of data across 20 TB worth of disk space. How am I going to achieve redundancy without buying more drives, and requiring more SATA ports, and therefore other new hardware?
You may have to do some shuffling, yes, but as for hardware it's just JBOD. Drives get added to a pool, and when you create a volume you choose what level of redundancy you want in that volume. At home, out of the a pool of 4 500GB SSD's and 12 3TB drives, I have RAID 0, RAID 6, RAID 10, and RAID 50 volumes. It's all software defined.

What? I had 4TB drives running fine on them back when I ran it.
>>
>>56121156
Like I said, you'll have to do some shuffling, but if you can start with a single drive in the pool, create the volume, transfer to it so you can add another drive, extend volume, add drive, enable redundancy, etc, it can be done. I don't have it handy or I'd throw up a pastebin of a script I wrote to do it.
>>
>>56121222

That's not what I'm asking. What I'm asking is, how does there come to be extra copies of the data when there's nine times more data than there is free space?

2TB drives are ~$40. Refurb or enterprise pulls are fine, provide the auction isn't for just one or two drives.

I don't even want SSDs honestly, just infinite free time to work on my artistic endeavors.
