So I've been looking at SSHDs out of curiosity and it's gotten me thinking, why can't I just create an sshd like drive using a regular hard disk and ram?
I currently have 12GB ram and a spare 250GB hard disk to fuck around with, could I somehow set aside 4GB ram for the hard disk and make my own sshd?
Does the amount of ram have to follow the power of 2 rule? Or if I upgrade to 16GB ram, could I use 6GB for the hard disk?
Are you talking about a RAM disk?

Not OP, is this a thing that can be done with old RAM sticks?

just use openssh like everyone else
also fuck off to /sqt/

Sorta, but using the ramdisk as a cache for the HDD instead of just storing the files in ram.

Doesn't RAM need to be dumped to a disk in order to be preserved when there is no current?

Years ago there was this thing for the Apple IIGS called RAM Keeper. It was a battery-backed (non-volatile) RAM disk. The idea was to get your OS and applications loaded on to it and run from there.

Perfect place to ask, should i get a 1TB SSD or a 512 SSD and a 2TB HDD? All my data currently adds up to about 740GB

Thats across two HDD that are dying too, so id be basically splitting whatever i get in half

Ssd and hdd, that's what I did.
120GB ssd for boot, 3TB hdd for everything else

Depends on your needs. Do you need SSD speeds for _all_ your content? If you have a fuckton of games you play often, a SSD helps load times. If you mostly watch HD movie rips or do anything else that's less intensive, a HDD will be just fine. If you just need a few files of each folder to be read faster and are willing to make your system more complex, you can use Intel Rapid Storage on Windows or Bache on Loonix.

Until now, I never knew this weather stone meme existed.

I feel enlightened.
Thank you, OP.
