It's true. Capitalism is making most people poor.
But you wouldn't loose access if idiotic app devs would stop using phone numbers as the account.
So far kik is the only app that uses an actual username and password to log in.
There's also chatsecure which lets you do xmpp.

only thing that i use that supports that is gmail and its only for spam mail. and i have had same phone number for ~10 years already..
