K, just making sure there's no real drawbacks before I take the time to do this. I was considering slapping on linux but even that makes me nervous they will destroy it and call me up a week later. Best part is being in 4 hour time zone difference, so I get calls after I get home from work in the late hours of the night.

I'll give the most competent adult out there with a regular windows laptop in case they still have to do anything moderately serious.

Elders will never fully understand a laptop or desktop no matter what the OS is. Just buy them a tablet and install apps they will need, and show them how to download games. Every time you visit them, you get the clean all the bloat and games they never play installed. It's the best case scenario.

Last time I checked Chrome OS doesn't work decently with less than 2 GB of RAM, so old ass laptops won't really work fine

ChromeOS is in breakable, even by old people anti technomancy magic.
It will be just fine for em, show them Tinychat for video chatting.
