If I wanted to get into the semiconductor fabrication business, I would need literally billions of dollars down just to start shipping out chips.

Not many people/companies are willing or able to do this. It would take massive balls to stand up and start undercutting a giant like Qualcomm. Especially since they would have a massive motivation to go double-or-nothing to stay number one, because they would risk such a retardedly huge investment.

However they have a much higher profile than most others, for many reasons, including:
- a tough approach to IPR that has scared the living daylight out of their opponents and patent attorneys
- a high profile at home, complete with a stadion named after them
- one of the few (if not the only one) remaining in the US

- pays well and is an attractive employer, will credit inventors and co-inventors (see "Patent Wall")
