why shouldn't i buy a gateway? why should i buy a modem + router instead?
A modem + router is generally more reliable and flexible, but do whatever you want.

>reliable
because if one part breaks, i only have to replace one device as opposed to an entire gateway?
what are the odds anything would break anyway?

Yeah that's one reason

In consumer routing equipment?
Most of it's going to be broken before you even turn it on.

you're trying to be funny of course but that's what the warranty is for

so you can have a nice modem and a nice router and not one box that kinda shitty at both roles?
plus, if you move and get stuck somewhere with DSL, you at least would only have to buy a cheapo modem for that instead of a whole new box?
