Why do people feel that 720p on a 5-5.5" phone is bad?

Because you can tell the difference between that 1080p and 1440p at those screen sizes. If people couldn't then nobody would be buying phones with 1440p displays.

Also what's wrong with VR? Modern phones are actually pretty capable of providing decent graphics for VR like the Note 7.

I'd say at that size 1080p is reasonable, you can see a difference at normal viewing distances. With 1440p on the other hand you really need to move unnaturally close to the display to see the difference. At that point it's just pointless spec sheet bullshit.

Pretty sure you only need 1080p+ at 5" for VR reasons. I'm doing well with 720p.
