>THEY FELL FOR THE NAND SSD MEME
>3Dxpoint will hit the consumer market in 2017
>it will be affordable by 2018
Sure thing family.
Why is pci 4.0 still going to use copper? They should switch to optical instead of waiting for 5.0.
>>56007209
Woah, slow down there.
We're not using exotics in our CPU's yet, optical is still quite a while away.
Cool.
I hope it's a cost effective choice by 2022.

But we need a fast interface for these SSD's. Nvme x4 and even x8 is just too slow.
>>56007386
Yes, we do, but the current PCIe 4.0 standard is 16GT/s, which is more than even HBM2 can saturate.
3Dxpoint is at the least, 4X slower than DRAM, and is nowhere near saturating PCIe 4.0
>>56007386
The limiting component of SSDs isn't their interface to the CPU, its their controllers. They can't sustain peak write/read speeds of IOPS, they're only handling small bursts, then dropping way down in performance.
We can hit speeds north of 2000MB/s on some tiny drives, they just can't hold that speed for long.
so how much faster, more capacity and more lifetime does this have than my samsung 850 evo 250GiB?
>>56007476
~20x faster I/O
~4x faster latency
~1000x more durable (the controller will fail before the memory, but that's the case with most consumer SSD's anyway)
probably similar capacity to Samsung's 3D NAND

But pci 4 won't even be finalized until next year. In two or three it will be completely saturated. It took them over 7yrs to make a new standard. We need optical interconnects.
>>56007448
Yes we need this too. Heat seems to be the big thing here with the throttling. Obviously going to need smaller controller transistors. Maybe just put them on the cpu.

1TiB quantx ssd for $100 when?
>>56007428
Who cares? Why would you even use an M.2, unless you are using a 2011-3 socket?
Consumer-grade CPUs only support 16 pci lanes, so if you plug in an M.2 you graphics card will be running at half the bandwith.
>>56007636
You forgot the chipset spaghetti.
