I'm about to shop for a new computer, budget is limited. Probably looking to spend $600-700 USD, this will be for personal and work use, as well as school. Recommend me something that will get me my money's worth.
Bonus points if it's something that can run PS2-tier games or can later be upgraded to have better parts for gaming.

Buy a raspberry pi 1 and install gentoo

why did this make me laugh
>>55983619
With $700 USD you could buy the parts needed to build a computer that can play Witcher 3 on high quality.

The best option at that budget is without a doubt a Thinkpad e450 or e460. Seriously, no competition

Mind showing me? I'm honestly pretty fucking illiterate when it comes to what parts are good and what aren't good.
Of course I could research it, but then I wouldn't be here asking you guys for help.

Thank you

For someone who has never put together a computer, how hard could it be to put it together for the first time?
>>55983704
Here's what I build last year.
CPU: Intel i5-4460 CPU @ 3.2 GHZ, stock cooler - $230 CDN
Graphics Card - EVGA GTX 750 TI - $144 CDN
Board - H97 AS Rock - $79CDN
EVGA 500W PSU - $45 CDN
Corsair SPEC-01 RED LED case - $64 CDN
Team Elite Plus 16GB RAM - $64 CDN
Total: $626 CDN
I already had hard drives so I didn't have to buy new ones.
Just turn Nvidia hairworks off if you want stable FPS

It's not too bad. Don't force anything and wear an anti-static wriststrap
On, and make sure all of those tiny connectors are connected to the right pins. You might fry a USB stick if you didn't do it properly.
I was an IT fag in university. First semester I was asked to take apart a computer and rebuild it. First time I had ever done it and it took me 3 hours.

get a used macbook air (early 2014) or later for good battery life. ebay
>>55983859
Shit, that's $475 USD, not too bad. Thank you.
I had looked at this as far as pre-built computers but it feels like a fucking ripoff

Thank you. I'm watching some YouTube video of EasyPCBuilder as he's putting together a computer to kinda have an idea of what I'd be getting into. I definitely have to do my homework on it because I wouldn't want to fuck anything up and then not know how to fix it or have to spend money on a replacement.
Thanks a lot.

Buy a literal piece of shit.
>>55984065
I was in the same position as you, built my own and loved it. Go for it OP, it's fun and cheap.
>>55984426
Yeah I'm thinking about it more and more.
Would you guys recommend going with Intel over AMD? And if so, is i5 going to be obsolete any time soon to where I'd be better off with i7?
>>55984670
The only reason to get an i7 is if you want >4 cores.
An i5 and i7 at the same core count and frequency are basically identical, especially for gaymen.
Get a radeon 480 & i5 cpu, 8gb ram 1tb hdd, cheap mobo, itll btfo a ps4 and total computer around $600
