How does /g/ feel about Google Cardboard or mobile VR in general?
What do you use it for?

It's kinda cool for making VR interfaces as a developer that can't afford a proper dev kit.
Other than that, it's neat for things like street view.

Nice for porn

nice for kicking back and watching movies and videos while laying down.

PCVR is a pain in the ass for watching movies because of the wire running to the PC and having to be within the tracking FoV. Not comfy to lie down in.

Both smartphone VR and PCVR are rather front heavy for prolonged use though. I can use the vive for an hour tops before my neck starts getting sore.

Smartphones lack the processing power for good looking games, battery life sucks, and thermal design is in the shitter.

I'd wait for daydream to become commercial at least before even considering getting into smartphone VR.

Eventually I can see the appeal of having a VR be a standalone system similar to the sullon cortex.

Frankly for prolonged use I'd prefer AR, for entertainment and gaming at home VR. With AR it should be possible to include VR as a subset.

VR sucks for outdoor use and makes you look like a complete douche. You'd be asking for people to fuck with you.

I bought a chink headset for about 20 bucks, watched a movie and that's about it.

Unless your phone has 1440p resolution it's gonna look shitty

Why aren't there cheap VR headsets for PC?
>>
>>55960525
It's a struggle for me. Damn video keeps drifting to the side and I have to keep resetting the orientation every 20 seconds.

OSVR devkit is as low as you can go.
>>

I got a cardboard so I can play elite dangerous with VRidge. I have autism.

Have a look at chink shit general they might have somehting
>>
Was cool at first.
But then I realised watching 360 youtube videos is a pain in the ass unless they're really well directed.
Proper VR is badass though and I look forward to trying it out

Cardboard is shit. GearVR is awesome. Low persistence and the extra sensors are a must.

3d vr porn is amazing
>>
Not sure if I got a bad unit but my GearVR for my S7 was total shit, sold it on ebay after a few days.

I don't see the appeal of 3D porn except for cuckold POV porn.
>>
Porn mostly.

>300 bucks
thats supposed to be low?
>>
i have iphone 6+ and the full hd screen is not enough for video content on google cvardboard

No, but it is very hard to go any lower.

Cheap PCVR has to have a minimum of one shitty display, 2 lenses, and some form of effective tracking system to work. If it is not designed properly then you better have 911 on speed dial and a barf bag lying around.

At the moment PCVR is an enthusiast's toy and early adopters item, you will have to wait for amortization and mass production to kick in for it to be affordable. Minimum PC hardware specifications capable of running Vive/CV1 equivalent is dropping in price as newer GPUs are released.

I hope OSVR kicks off and many peripheral manufacturers join the fray that would push prices down tremendously due to higher competition and greater supply.

Google cardboard is as cheapest VR solution you can get, if you already have a shitty android phone that can support it and hack in support for steamVR by connecting it to a PC and slapping on a $30 leap motion controller off alibaba.

It will suck complete balls but it works.

Or you could try some cheap chink shit oculus DK1 counterfeit don't know how much one of them would cost. Probably somewhere around 100~200 USD.

Don't waste your money just wait it out, shit will improve and you will get the same crap or better for a way cheaper price.
