I'm a uni student with 2 years of misery left studying a course that I love but has a low chance of getting me decent work (environmental conservation). I'm looking for a field in It to study for an hour a day so when I leave uni I have a chance of being employed with decent pay. A few people have told me not to get into Windows and to do Linux instead. What would you anons recommend I research? I have a powerful gaming pc so I can use a lot of programmes so there's no limiting factors in that department. Thanks for any advice.

You write like an imbecile. My recommendation is to take a few English classes and learn to compose a sentence properly.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

There's different types of programming, where should I begin?
>>55950969
It's my second language, I'm posting from my phone and I've just woken up.

Everyone's gotta start somewhere, if I put in an hour a day for 2 years I feel that I'll have made enough progress to be hireable, the question is what to actually begin researching. Plus my brother had to use a powerful computer when doing research for his PhD in astrophysics, something to do with mapping out different stars and I remember him saying normal computers couldn't run the stuff he had to use. This was a few years ago though so my memory may be incorrect
>>55951041
Haha, so many people call it Linux so thought that was just the name of the operating system, I'll call it gnu from now on! Thanks for the information mate.

Come to think of it I don't think it was the programme but the amount of numbers involves that a normal cpu couldn't handle. Again I'm probably completely wrong as I have no xp in It apart from basic gcse level shit.

Bump for interest, anyone have a decent starting point?

Just give up.
You're already wasting your time on a useless course, and IT will most definitely not offer any good pay.
You're better off dropping out and taking an English course, a Mathematics course, and introductory CS course.
