Test out Linux distros and learn how to compile systems before going balls deep on my laptops.

Also gaymes in windows XD
>>
>>55939116
Great! I would like to use it also to test out Linux distros.

A host of boring and experimental stuff. The boring stuff ties into a MAN (direct wireless link) and some of the guests have services that replicate with another location a few miles across town. And then one server in the back of a mobile trailer which connects in via WAN, also utilizing replication.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>55939387
True that seems good. If I ever get a very powerful machine that could handle all of this i'll keep it in mind.

3. FreeBSD VM so I can pretend I am l337 while I am not
>>
>>55939309
How does it run? Pretty sure it wouldn't run a lot of things at good frame rates, if at all.
>>
>>55940664
Haha not bad. I might set up a Manjaro VM just to see what it is like.
>>
>>55940693
It's actually useful. If you have a tested compilation experience you can do the same with your main OS.
>>
I try out OS's other than the two I'm using on my laptop right now, always on the lookout for the next distro I'll hop to.

I also have an El Capitan VM on the Win7 side of my laptop, just because I wanted to see if I could do it.
>>
>>55940710
What do you mean?
>>
>>55940730
Yea that is what I want to do, I got Ubuntu but I don't know if it's my favorite OS ever, I found myself going back to Windows 10.
I want to keep trying others, I think Manjaro is going to be my next.

How does OS X run within a VM?
>>
>>55940753
Sometimes when you do projects like compiling pulseaudio server, or seafile server or compiling own kernel you should test it in a VM to be safe. Arch being vanilla makes the job easy
>>
>>55940777
Oh ok I understand, I never do these things though. If I ever want to try out Arch then i'll test it out in a VM.
>>
I use it to install operating systems for other computers. Create a raw image of the target disk and load it up with the install iso within the VM. Goes faster and gives you copy/paste and internet troubleshooting capabilities too.
>>
>>55940802
Why don't you just install it normally?

>>

I haven't done much at all with it, to tell you the truth. Last I used it (well over a month ago) I think the tutorial I was using said I needed to download a program within the VM to make it run smoothly (It was rather choppy just after getting it to actually open), so I'm guessing it's possible to get it running nicely - I just haven't yet.
>>
>>55940957
I see no point in running OS X though. I can see why it's choppy, much more resource intensive than Linux.

>>
>>55941029
Meh, not the biggest fan of OS X personally, it's alright and I can use it but I like Windows better.
>>
>>55940985
My laptop would have no issue running it outside of a VM, if we're just talking about specs. Again, I had just reached the point of "actually loads" and hadn't done the other things the tutorial suggested to make it usable. Probably won't use OSX as my main OS, but I'm still curious to know how it functions.

I run a VM for the sole purpose of VPN'ing into client networks so as to not lock down my machine from local resources or have my local web traffic routed through the VPN.

I also run an XPenology server.

I used to run a Domain Controller but that wasn't a good idea.

Any OS/platform I may need to do development in (e.g. Hackintosh)

Spool up VM's for automated builds and deployments.

Quick question: How can I get my hands on LTSB? And is it worth installing?
>>
>>55942998
Not possible AFAIK
>>
>>55939249
God yes. If you're seriously ask, try everything out in a Virtualbox before ever installing it on your computer. You need to learn if you're really going to use this shit before you commit to dualbooting or even wiping windows entirely.

If you don't, what you end up with is me. Having to sit with my computer when I turn it on, because GRUB boots to Linux by default and I'm too stupid to

A) Change that
B) Wipe Linux off my computer and restore the windows boot loader

Is it possible? Yes. It's called a VM escape.
Is it likely? No. VM escapes are scarce and very hard to use, garden variety malware will not feature them. Some malware actually shuts itself down if it thinks its in a VM, because typical users don't run them - it figures that if its in a VM, it's being analyzed by a security researcher.

>>
>>55943129
>>Also out of curiosity is it common for the malware to shut it's self down?
Most doesn't, as far as I know, but its something you wouldn't be very surprised to see. I think some cryptolockers do it.

If you're just fucking around you don't have to worry about malware escaping a VM. Governments have to worry about that kind of malware. As do cloud providers and companies that people will go to great lengths to attack (banks and such) VM escapes are the kind of things you find in the Stuxnets of the world, not the things you get from clicking ads.

Just to elaborate; let's say a malware that was designed for Windows, which is running in a VM on a Linux OS, then even if there were VM escape, wouldn't it be harmless anyhow? So long as you're not running the same OS within the VM? Or could you still get fucked with some complex rootkit or fuck up your BIOS? I guess what I am asking essentially are there interchangeable malware, able to affect several OS or filesystem types?

I don't know of any malware that's natively cross-platform.

the only thing you'd be in danger from is a.) the malware infecting other Windows machines across the network, or b.) the fact that if your Linux box has Wine on it, it will happily run malware just like any other Windows executable.

But that would only be effective for anything running within the wine, sandboxed so-to-speak from doing anything to the Linux system itself. No gaining root privileges, etc. So, practically as if it were running inside a VM? Which is kinda what Wine is, virtualization, isn't it?
>>

Anything Wine runs has complete access to the Linux filesystem with your privileges. This is why they tell you to never, ever, ever run Wine as root.

So if you're doing things right, the malware wouldn't toast the actual Linux OS, but it could fuck up anything your user account can touch.

Yeah, that wouldn't be very smart. That's why I was wondering what damage it could do on Wine, without giving Wine root permission, obviously.
>but it could fuck up anything your user account can touch
Ok, see now that's interesting. I guess what I'm most curious of is whether or not a cryptolocker, let's say, designed for Windows could somehow harm an Android system. Might be near impossible or rare, but I wouldn't be surprised if this start to become a problem.

Because anti-malware software is pointless, and blacklists priacy software. What to see what VirusTotal says? 1/3rd of the software doesnt detect it, 1/3rd says its a keygen/crack, 1/3 says its a trojan each using a different name because they're all made up.

VPN client came with custom installer from my primary client and locks everything the fuck down (another reason I don't want it on my host OS). I can't do shit with it. Maybe I could if I knew some things I don't, but I have too much going on to spend hours trying to figure it out when the VM works and is simple.

Will it ever be possibler with one video card? I like to use my GPU on Linux. Emulators and NNEDI are fine here, I would only use Windows on a KVM for those hard to run games and DX12 exclusive bullshit.

i like to test shit out; run keygens, etc etc.

basically anything that might benefit from not running on my OS itself/running in a clean environment. just pick out a project you wanna do and try it. worst that can happen is you wipe it away and start over again.

snapshots are cool, too
>>
I use it in the work.
They obligate us to have windows OS, so they can control it by domain/RDP/etc.
For someone using Linux for 15 years, this is a no no for me, so I set up a VM windows guest on my Linux host with minimum resources, everybody win.

Testing malware and shit that could potentially fuck up your computer.

They're also nice for practice runs of installing linux distros and shit like that.

Also, virtual Beowulf clusters are fun as hell.

I use them to test webapps before setting them up on my rented server. So for example if I want to run a self-hosted git repo, I'll start up a lot of VMs and give each a shot and see what I like best. Right now I'm testing forum software.

Exactly my problem. I was able to install Windows onto a USB but it asks for some sort of media driver before I can install Windows... No idea how to fix it.

It's supposed to sound like something Richard Stallman said. If you're not familiar with Richard Stallman, he's a self-absorbed 50 year old autistic manbaby who flips his shit and rages on anything he didn't come up with.

He preaches like a lunatic about free software and takes issue with open source even though they're effectively the same fucking thing, he'll dig and nitpick until he can find something to hate about it because it was somebody else's idea and he can't handle the idea of someone with more charisma, business sense, and forethought being more successful than he is.

He's so butthurt that Linux is a more attractive and marketable name than "GNU" that he's kept operating systems off of his super speshul muh freedums OS list simply because they call it "X linux" instead of "X GNU/Linux" which he feels is "disrespectful" to him.

When interviewed, he responds to every single question with rehearsed, canned FUD, tells the interviewer they said shit that they didn't, implies that they're stupid and then berates them for hating freedom.

The following is a recreation of the average Stallman interview

Interviewer: "One of the issues that linux has run into is marketability, what do you think can be done to increase the appeal of linux to the masses?"

RMS: "Well first of all, it's the GNU operating system, which can run using the Linux kernel. And I've been telling you for an hour now why people should be using free software! My computer here has no proprietary software installed on it, even the BIOS is free software! And now you're telling me that everyone should just use Windows or Apple because it's easier or more familiar? People are literally selling themselves into literal slavery! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! FUCKING NORMIES SPENDING THEIR TENDIES ON MACFAG WINBLOWS BULLSHIT REEEEEE!"

So naturally /g/ worships him.

Yep pretty much this. A lot of the things that he says is true, but most of it is him being delusional.
Does he even have a house?

Oh also he is known for being very weird, like once he picked something from between his toes and put it in his mouth on live TV or some shit like that.

I run a vpn server, torrent server, emby server, web dev instances on linux vms

Thing is, when I make a good VM, I can use it everywhere. All I have to do is set it up once and I'll have the same settings always. For example I set up an openvpn server few months ago and deployed the same instance at work, home and my cabin. Just simply made new certificates and everything worked.

Deploying emby was even easier, just imported existing disk image and it was up and running with same confs on multiple machines.

I love kvm/qemu.

I also have windows vms for muh games and cad work
