FML, I just can't stop shopping for watches. After buying 5 this year and promising that I'd stop and save until next year for a Speedy and a Nomos, I'm making excuses to buy entry-level/mid-range watches as presents for other people. People who aren't necessarily into watches. I want off this wild ride.

Tried it out before I bought the field khaki and its a lot more shouty design wise compared to the hamilton. Lume is crap on both of them so if you like good lume stick to seiko. 28,800 bph is a bit nicer than the usual 21,600 on the seikos its competing with.

Pretty basic finishing, decent work horse movement. Styling might be dated in a few years. Reminds me of a Nike in watch form. Did you get it during the Jomashop sale? How's the time keeping? I wonder what grade of that movement Tissot uses, and whether or not they adjust it.

What is the consensus on specifically THIS watch the Ocean 1 Vintage Military, the homage to the Rolex 5517. $400 shipped from the company but its $520 for an older version on Ebay. Can someone explain to me why the older version with the incorrect depth rating is more expensive?

I'm shopping for an under $400 used entry-level luxury as a belated father's day present for my dad (looking at Oris's and some higher-end Hamiltons now). He's kind of a pleb-tier watch enthusiast (knows a bit about the big brands like Rolex, Omega, Seiko, Citizen etc. and the difference between the different types of movements) and currently wears a Seiko Kinetic as his daily driver. He also bought a bunch of replica Rolexes for shits and giggles on a China trip years ago. So I think he'll appreciate a Swiss/German meme watch. I wanted to buy the gf an Orient but she refuses to wear any watch.

Would any of you guys be interested in purchasing this citizen from me?

It's the citizen I thought was running retarded from ages ago

Turns out it just needs a service. It would tick for a couple of hours but when the mainspring stopped applying maximal torque as it unwinded it would stop because of the lubricants that had thickened. And when I picked it up to check the time it had gained and lost it the movement from doing so would get it moving again

I'm willing to get it serviced before selling it, I'll give a receipt for the service as well

What do you guys think about the Bulova moon watch?
To be honest I like it better then the Omega one and it doesn't seems like they're milking the shit out of it with that whole man on the moon bullshit.

It uses the 262khz, so that's neato I guess. Only drawback is that I'm afraid that it will be too big for 19cm/7.5 wrist as it is almost 45mm.

No way to actually try in on as barely anyone in this shithole country sells it, and even the ones that do charge it for almost 1500$ and I'm not gonna make that trip just to get mad.

If they actually used the same movement & dial layout as the original, I'd buy it in an instant. It's a one of a kind though, so I can understand why they wouldn't want to take it apart just to remake the movement.
>>
>>55924828
the only watch by my post that is even worth purchasing.
>>
>>55928532

It's a pretty cool watch. I don't like the 1/10th seconds register though, wish the chronograph was seconds/minutes/hours instead. As for the size it'll be fine. I've got the same size wrist and have tried on watches that size and they fit, any bigger though is no good.

I do have to admit. I feel the need to call you a cunt.

E52903 is what is printed

Tell me what you find on it. If you don't buy it and it is in need of more then a serivce I'm more then happy to give you the money back, I'm an honest guy

>>55931008
I explained it earlier, I thought it was gaining or losing 12 hours per day

Then I thought it had a mainspring problem due to a low power reserve

But I'm almost certain that it just needs a serivce, it runs fine and doesn't loose any notable amount of accuracy in the first say 4 hours (as far as I've kept eye on it before going out or going to sleep) then it will stop I'm assuming because less torque is being applied and it will seize on the old lubricants

I didn't notice this earlier because the movement of me shaking it to pick it up and look at it to check the time would get it moving again

It was a joke. Thanks for the advice, but I own like 20 Vostoks. This is from the 70's indicated by their catalogs. The only appropriate parts for this watch would be from the same model, which just isn't economical to source even if they're not that rare. I'd be better off buying a whole new one in better shape, or just stick with my charmingly worn $10 one.

Anon that ain't Radium.

Old, aged Radium has been a very dark brown tinted lume (Almost chocolate like), and it wasn't used in Soviet watches post the early 1960's (As did most of the world)

Does any watches employ other lubricants? In cold weather graphite is used and it does not thicken or absorb contaminants.

Alternatively one can apply a thin film coat of a material with high hardness, a technique already in use for other purposes.

Again, I got this Vintage Omega Day/Date Cal. 1022 yesterday, paid $230 USD. I have two main questions if anyone can answer them, just in general about vintage Omegas, maybe specifically the cal. 1000 series movements. Btw pic is of my Omega. I am actually quite happy, it is in good overall condition, and the second hand vibrates/beats 8 times per second, or in other words, 28,800 VPH. This left me pleasantly surprised, as the second hand has a bit more fluidity.

So really, I am assuming it has the hexalite crystal, is that correct?
Also, regarding the 1000 series, how accurate were the movements when they were initially released? If regulated, what is the accuracy range I can reasonably expect?
>>
>>55932196
>So really, I am assuming it has the hexalite crystal, is that correct?
Hesalite, and no.

What it should have is an acrylic/plastic crystal.

>how accurate were the movements when they were initially released? If regulated, what is the accuracy range I can reasonably expect?
Regulated and (recently) well serviced movements ideally would be in the +/- 30 seconds per day range.

As far as yours is concernced, as long as it's within +/-2~3 minutes a day i wouldn't be too worried.
>>
>>55931934
How well does the radium light up?

The lume on my Seiko is after 1 hour about the same strength as my 2 years old tritium glow stick so there is much to be said for radioactive sources.
>>
>>55932196
>>55932196
My understanding is the 1XXX series movements were put into production due to lower manufacturing cost in an attempt to compete with quartz. I've never seen any chronometer grade ones. As far as collecting goes, they aren't as popular as the earlier 3XX and 5XX movements which have better finishing. Still a good swiss movement despite it not being as refined. Kinda in the same boat as the Lemania 5100 but a bit more underrated imho.
>>
>>55932440
It doesn't. The radium never actually glowed. It was some other chemical it was mixed with that reacted to it and glowed. That completely oxidezed after like 10 years so now the radium is just there.
>>
>>55932318
Okay, that would explain why I don't have the etched Omega logo in the middle of the crystal, since it isn't a hesalite.
Otherwise, so far it is keeping time around the +/- 17 seconds mark, but one day is hardly enough time to get an estimated accuracy.

>>55932527
I am aware that this was one of the budget Omegas at the time, clearly not in tough competition with the higher end Omega models in the early 70's. Nonetheless, the dial is original and in good shape. The movement seems to be doing fine, the quickset and hacking is nice to have, but I am really just considering flipping it, given I got it for $230, maybe I can double my money, and purchase a Speedy or Grand Seiko.
>>
>tfw my seiko 5 now gains more than a minute per day

I knew that, just trying to avoid excessive details. Usually the fluorescent material was mixed in. However an alternative would be to paint with radium first and then provide a top coat of fluorescent material on top.

The "Radioactive Boy Scout" got hold of a container of radium paint. He found it when his Geiger counter told him something "interesting" was in a shop. Awesome story.

Look into this company if you don't want to do the work yourself. They charge like $110 for everything sans parts. They also will replace the stock crystal with Sapphire.

I was looking at that, too. I love the date window placement. It's all so simple and symmetrical. The only thing that really kills it for me is how crowded that inner bezel is. For the same money, you can get the Steinhart OVM, so there's that.

I just picked up three watch batteries for my old Fossils for kicks. $10. Keep in mind, you'll have to have automatic watches serviced. Sure, this won't happen as often as battery swaps, but it's much more expensive in the long run.

I really want a Grand Seiko GMT but can't justify the 4 grand to spend on one. I need the GMT feature because I work as a pilot and the Gran Seiko actually looks elegant unlike most pilot watches which are just awful. Are there any cheaper alternatives that look this classy and have the single-hand style GMT indicator instead of the usual small faces inside the larger watch face? Thanks.

Catalog guy here
So Omega sent me an email with a usps tracking number and shit.
I'm not gonna get charged for this somehow right..?
The Nomos catalog was sent all the way from germany and even had a suggested price for the catalog.
How are these companies able to afford sending out free shit?

You might have a B version.
In general though the 7s26 is very bad with shock and it annoys me when people thrash around any mechanical watch.
I would say get a komandirski or a quartz since you clearly aren't enough of an adult to own fragile objects.
>>
>>55944088

Catalogs are part of marketing and are just a teeny tiny drop in the bucket compared to like the racing and sporting sponsorship some of these brands do.
>>
>>55944088
Did you send them an email asking for the catalogs? I'd love a Nomos one.
>>
>>55944196
I'm enough of an adult to be working and doing physical activities, while also not babying a $50 watch as if it were a work of art. It's a fucking timekeeping tool.
And yes it is a 7s26b indeed.

Yep. Did it with a whole bunch of brands. Rolex and Seiko don't seem to mail catalogs sadly.
I've been very memed on the Ahoi since flipping through the catalog, the price book is pretty painful though.
>If only I could afford a lambda
>>55944220
Even a 50 dollar mechanical movement is made of very small moving parts. They WILL shit out on you if you don't respect them for what they are.
>>
>>55944220

The B revision has a documented design flaw where it can't handle shocks and the balance spring will get tangled because of it. The original A revision did not have that issue and I believe it was fixed in the C revision.

>>
>>55944904
Kinetic is a quartz watch with a rechargeable battery linked up to a dynamo powered by a rotor. The rotor spins, the dynamo generates power and recharges the battery.

However, like most rechargeable batteries, if you let them drain 100% and let it sit like that for a few months there is a good chance you won't be able to charge them up again.
