Did you guys see this bash thing on windows?

Thoughts? is this good news?
Why bother using Bash within Windows when you can just use Linux? Bash sucks anyway. Besides, it's Windows 10 only so it's worthless
> W10 only
> cannot have the Linux programs in Windows PATH
literally worse than cygwin

get ready for those even easier bash hacks
you thought powershell was bad ...think again

All memes aside, my thoughts on this are that Linux and Windows both have warts. Their architectural philosophies are so radically different that combining them will only result in pain for me. As a server dev, this changes nothing for me. I'm going to keep using the platform I'm familiar and comfortable with to avoid the problems that will necessarily arise with two complex systems interacting.

how else are you going to appreciate your correctly rendered fonts? /s
In truth the only time fonts have jumped out at me is installing Windows 10 shit at work.

Very good news. It will keep even more shitheads on Windows who will not pollute Linux and BSDs with their shitty requests anymore.

So far it's a piece of shit. Half the commands don't even work right. Just try typing "ip link" to see what I mean.
I need ip link to see what the Windows bash calls my wireless adapter so I can change its MAC address. Also need to use iw to connect to a specific bssid. So far I have to stay on Linux for this, because the Windows bash is too halfassed.
I'm tempted to try it, I use this for all my bash needs on Windows:
http://cmder.net/
I only need Windows because of a SDK that isn't available on Linux. The way I understand it, the MS-Ubuntu bash thing is actual Linux binaries. So unlike cygwin, it cannot interact with the Windows environment. It's 2 different systems hosted on a Windows machine.
>>55922288
haven't cared
been running Cygwin for years now
Why would someone use bash on Windows? Serious question.. I can't think of anything
>>55922288
can you explain what this means?
>>55925543
Since it was unveiled at a developer conference. I assume developers might like it when testing applications on a Ubuntu operating system, without having to set up virtual or physical machines
>>55922288
Since when did windows have a unix file hierarchy?
>>55927063
maybe it is similar to/home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files
>>55922355
It's not just bash. It's an entire Ubuntu 14.04 running natively on the NT kernel.
It's awesome. I use zsh on W10 to connect to our server clusters instead of having to use Putty. SSH tunneling works great.
The only bad thing I've discovered is that tools that rely on inotify doesn't work properly.
>>55927118
Don't you need the developer or insider build shit to get it?
>>55927130
Not anymore. It came out 2 days ago.
