The requirement of a newer os is intels fault, not microsofts. You can't just change the whole core w7 just to make it compatible with a skylake cpu.

List for us the top 5 applications you run on Windows. Chances are there are versions for Linux, or equivalents.

(Not gonna lie, Office Libre's Powerpoint replacement BLOWS, but, freedoms.)

By the way, I won the WinX threatware battle finally by doing a clean install and installing the roll-up updates. But I shouldn't have to go to that much trouble just to keep my PC configured the way I like it. Fuck you, M$.
>>
Why do you guys hate win 10 so much. It's the best windows yet coming close to win7.
I upd to win10 and only had advantages to this day.

the problem aren't the applications, the problem is the graphics stack and the desktop environments. I use Linux daily and I think it's a shit experience. You really notice that unlike the kernel, very few people are being paid to work on userspace Linux, and it really shows.
Hell, Intel GPU drivers are considered to be the least painful but they're still broken garbage in many cases, and the mesa GL implementation is hopelessly slow compared to proprietary drivers.

Well you see. When a processor is made they have to do extensive testing with every operating system that exists. Well they used to but this time Intel said fuck it and only support Windows 10. Most BIOSes won't run on it either. It is just such an advanced processor, the medieval OSs won't run on it. Like trying to get your Toyota to run on 95 octane gas, it simply won't work.

Linux has had nicer desktop than windows ever since I've been using linux. My jaw hit the table when I saw how beautiful KDE3 was compared to 98se. Windows 10 has got to be the ugliest windows version since then. Windows 7 was a poor imitation of kde4.
>>
Had Windows Vista on PC. Got Windows 7 because Vista was a virus. Upgrade to Windows 10. Windows 10 says fuck you and goes slow even though Nvidia GPU and AMD processor. Want to remove new Windows 10 virus. Windows 7 corrupted and don't have CD key anymore for that OS. My question is if Vista is still good OS and if I should revert back to Vista if they fixed how crap it was or if I should pirate Windows 7 or some shit because Windows 10 is cancer on that PC
>>
>>55915814
I don't know but you want 7 over vista.
>>

7 is still better than Vista? I read somewhere they improved Vista to the point where it was comparable to performance to 7 some time ago. I know "Windows 7 best M$ OS" but I thought vista wasn't a complete degenerate anymore

I just got a new laptop with Win10, is it worth the hassle to convert it to Win7?
I managed to avoid the telemetry update for Win7 on my old laptop, do I have to worry about that for this new one?
I just want to use this laptop for internet browsing and maybe play rom emulators now and then.
>>
>>55914764
Either use an older version of windows or buy a mac. Clearly you're too stupid to figure out Linux.
>>
>>55916859
>I managed to avoid the telemetry update for Win7 on my old laptop, do I have to worry about that for this new one?
that telemetry and a whole lot more is baked into W10, with no way to turn it off. (you can't even put MS domains in the hosts file to block access to them, the OS ignores that)

If all your doing is messing with emulators and browsing then pick out the Linux of your choice and have done with it.

>>
>>55916752
I don't know about that case, but after all the hell I have dealt with given the new boot technology. My next move it to just buy a new computer with multiple hard drives. Given the time spent, a new TB SSD would be cost less at this point.

If that doesn't work then I just get a new cheap computer to allow Windows to support the new features, but not enough to do much else.

Sure. There are no working drivers on Linux distributions after 2007 for SiS hardware. Generic ones for GPUs give you 640x480 and network card disconnects itself every 15 seconds. Works like intended, right?

you're doing something wrong. 99% of the time either the program or something that does the same thing is available in your distro's repos. The whole point of the distro having repos is to avoid you going and downloading random software from the internet, actually, that's how a lot of malware spreads.

that plus wanting a GUI for everything sounds to me like you're trying to use Linux the exact same way you use Windows. Don't do that. Spend your effort learning a better way to do things, instead of spending it trying to avoid thinking.

>you're trying to use Linux the exact same way you use Windows. Don't do that. Spend your effort learning a better way to do things, instead of spending it trying to avoid thinking.

>>

nothing is inherently wrong with apt, it's just that a lot of stuff that isn't in the main repo's requires adding extra repo's, while on arch most of that software is in the official repo's
>>

>>I'm not doing something wrong, you expect EVERY program that I want to be in one repo?
uh... yeah. I can't remember the last time I needed something that wasn't in my distro's repos.

>Why the fuck would I want to think about how to use a computer.
Because it's a complicated general-purpose machine, not a toaster?

My aunt thinks like you. She clicks on links in spam and installs what it tells her to, and gets malware all the time. Every time I tell her not to do that she bitches about how it's too hard and they shouldn't expect ordinary people to have to know any of this stuff.

If you're not willing to think not only is Linux not for you, but computers aren't for you. Life isn't for you, when you come right down to it, since the more you're determined to not think, the more probable it is that someone who does think will take advantage of that.
>>
>>55918070
Thanks for missing the point entirely you fuckwad.
Anyway I don't give a shit what OS you use, my point was that you can't expect a modern OS to have hardware compatibility that goes that far back. Neat if Windows 10 pulls it off, shame linux does not. That's how it is. Doesn't mean much more than that though, a specific usecase.
>>
>>55918221

Oh Ok. I've come over as a recent migrant from Windows (10 is dogshit and they crippled 7) and was pleasantly surprised with how good Ubuntu had gotten.

I tried c. 2011, Ubuntu, Mint and Arch and was less than impressed, so setting up Ubuntu and having FDE, networking, all drivers working right out the box was pretty good for me. I'm not as much of an OS tinkerer so I've really enjoyed the experience.

They accomplish the same thing. You only prefer having a GUI option because you're used to it on Windows and already know where it is. To someone who doesn't know, searching "disable mouse acceleration" and getting the results "go into this menu and untick this box" and "type the following into a terminal" are equivalent.

And really, if you're unwilling to google "how to do (some task)" and follow the instructions that pop up, I wonder how you managed to learn to use a computer to begin with, on any operating system.

>To someone who doesn't know, searching "disable mouse acceleration" and getting the results "go into this menu and untick this box" and "type the following into a terminal" are equivalent.
No they aren't. Anyone's first instinct would be to go to the mouse settings. Having to google how to use your OS means it's doing a bad job.

Why hasn't anyone ported BASH functionality to web browsers? A simple...

...would be enough to remove 80% of the friction new Linux users experience when trying to use their systems. You could even have "Click here to enable repo", "Click here to install application". Yes, there are security risks involved, but Fedora already has "You need superuser permissions to do that". I imagine the other major distros do too.

Of course it would be disabled by default, but Apple's solution should be easy enough to emulate. A popup for "Your security settings do not allow programs from the internet to use bashlinks. Please click here to go to your Security Preferences and enable bashlinks."

..and...

"Only a select few commands are enabled by default, but advanced users can whitelist any command by entering it in the field below"

I wonder if I could make that a Firefox extension or a gnome extension or something.
>>
>>55918053
>that plus wanting a GUI for everything sounds to me like you're trying to use Linux the exact same way you use Windows. Don't do that. Spend your effort learning a better way to do things, instead of spending it trying to avoid thinking.

See I'm open to Linux but this is one thing I just don't understand. What fucking difference does it make if I browse for my files in the command line instead of just using a visual file manager? What benefit do I get out of typing 'ls' in every new folder I enter over just having all folder contents automatically visible by default in a gui? It's like the qwerty/dvorak thing, neither approach comes off as any more or less 'better' than the other to make it worth the effort and time to relearn something you already know how to do.

I agree with this guy.
I wouldn't have an issue with Linux OS' if not for ingrained counterintuitivity that is treated like a godsend by an insanely obnoxious cult like elitist following.
Because the Linux users see their Operating System as "smarter than Windows" because it doesn't have executable installers, and requires constant command line usage instead of convenient, thoughtful GUI design, there will never be improvement in that regard.

I mean for real, arguing that a GUI is for idiots, when using a Linux OS that has a GUI at the core is so ass backwards. Not to mention they cry at any notion of non open source content, as if the NSA is constantly planting backdoors into everything, and as if they actually give a shit what you're doing anyway.

you mean self-extracting binary packages

you know you can just download a .deb and double click it right?

>and requires constant command line usage instead of convenient, thoughtful GUI design
"constant usage" is definitely bullshit but if you want to make the argument that there's too much of it for you then fine.

but the reverse is true on windows as well, because 98% of tasks are done via clunky GUI sub-sub-sub-windows that hog focus.

if working through a centralized shell that lets me do nearly everything with a dozen keystrokes makes me an elitist, then so be it.

>I mean for real, arguing that a GUI is for idiots, when using a Linux OS that has a GUI at the core is so ass backwards.
GUIs are wonderful. they very often are superior to CLI. the cool thing about most Linux distros is that they almost always offer you ways to use both approaches.

I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you've never actually used a modern distro for more than 5 seconds.

I dont understand how the counterintuitivity is treated like a godsend, but I dont think that Linux user see the OS as "smarter than windows" in any arena, other than maybe features like built in disk encryption. I think that we think you have to be generally smarter to USE the OS (or at least more educated in CS/operating systems) but this is because of the bugginess.

That being said, the bugginess on most days is a minor headache (if it can even qualify as a headache) because if you have linux on your machine, chances are that you are a serious developer.

Getting past that, Linux is a great OS for devs. Aside from gcc and the like being built-in, linux really lets you modify the OS as you please. Not happy with a certain bash command? Write your own version! Bash is inherently better than cmd/batch, and after a while, as a linux dev, you get hooked on shell scripts for compilation and execution, and the ability to automate everything.

Making directories, deleting/renaming files is significantly faster in bash, plus you have things like hard links, sudo apt-get (afaict more secure and easier than windows installation), and of course, my personal favorite, vim (not because it is a pain in the ass to get used to).

The biggest benefit of all, to a conspiracy theorist, is of course that Ubuntu doesnt send your data to any corporate overlords. Im impartial here because I dont wear a tinfoil hat or have any extra chromosomes

I've used Mint and Ubuntu before, each one for several weeks at a time.
Ubuntu is despised on /g/ for having an "app store". I don't know what people here think of Mint, I though it was okay i guess.

Personally, I think that "self-extracting binary packages" (oh look at you) are something we created for a reason, and the lack thereof in linux is a major issue that tears the average user away from the GUI and overall user experience entirely.
Also, I'm sure that it's probably my fault, but I've never been able to successfully install a single program in Linux, I followed guide after guide, and it never worked. Maybe if I kept at it, I'd get it down, but for fucks sake, that's a barrier to entry for people who are new to it.

You know you can provide a download for .deb files in order to install packages, right?

stop gamming and do something useful with your time. also steam works on linux. also wine works good. Also FUCK your DRM games faggot.

Why would I want .deb files to be distributed if I'm already in the default repo?

>>55919740
I'll never understand winfag's attachment to downloading untrusted executable installers from fuck knows where.

>>55919740
To make it more accessible for normies. People know how to download a file and double click it.

he literally explained that Linux doesn't lack self extracting binary packages you dense fuck

That doesn't mean it's a good idea because >>55919786

At least with a link, they're getting it from a trusted repo. If someone really wanted to push malicious content, they'd have to set up their own repo and deliver it that way, meaning a user would get:

1. "The following repo: $repo is not trusted. Are you sure you wish to add this repo to your approved list?"

Adding a repo should be a bit stricter. It would obviously require the superuser password but you can also make a checkbox for "I understand that adding untrusted repositories can result in malware being delivered to my computer" and a 10-second countdown before allowing the user to add it.

Something like that would also incentivize repo maintainers and devs to either get their software in the default repo, or add a trust relationship so future versions of sources.list include their repo by default, or maybe a "trusted but not enabled by default" status.

2. "The following site: http://www.hurr.ru wants to install software on your computer. Are you sure you wish to allow this?"

For legitimate software coming from the default repo, using a link notation makes the process even easier, because all they'll do is click a link, get a security warning, and then the program is installed. It's one less step since there's no .deb package the user sees, and they get it through the repo, as they should be in the first place.
