That's good, but I'm not talking about bug fixes. I'm talking about taking the source for something and changing it to do a task that only you would want done, not for public consumption.
For example, there's a script that downloads all the top posts from gonewild. I changed it to only download from my friends list. It was easier to start with something open source and close to what I wanted, rather than write it from scratch.
I've never contributed patches, but I use code from open-source projects all the time for my own projects.
