What is the benefit to using codec packs like CCCP as oppose

What is the benefit to using codec packs like CCCP as opposed to, for example, something like this?

Codec packs aren't needed in 2016

All you need to do is use mpc-hc or mpv

Just install the media player with your package manage. It will automatically pull the necessary codecs as as dependency.

The main codec packs don't install codecs anymore. CCCP and K-Lite Standard are just MPC-HC, madVR, and VSFilter.
