i tested all relevant distros and the ubuntu unity is the most """professional""" and complete distro.

arch is also great but I only run it in a vm to test new stuff

debian is also reliable, but is 3 years behind in everything.

opensuse and fedora are not suited for actual use and gentoo is for linux enthusiasts

tldr: use ubuntu unity and arch in a vm

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

but it has:
>shitty preconfiguration
>unusable tools
>no software in official repos
>KDE like releases - everything is broken once a year from base up
>slow package manager (again its shitty default configuration)
Not to mention you have to fuck around to make samba or SElinux working the way you want, while most of the available documentation is plain old.
Aside from that i agree its a really good distro, once the release is older, the RPMfusion repos get their stuff right and, and once you configure everything to your taste, its fast and solid. But then again you can configure every distro like that.

>>
>>55903938
Runs fine, Fedora's really slow to shut down even on an SSD for some reason though.
>>
>>55903774
>shitty preconfiguration
I don't see anything wrong with mine. And I run the KDE spin, which says a lot.

>unusable tools
How can the toolset offered by Fedora, 99% of which is standard GNU/Linux software, unusable? Is binutils unusable? Is gcc unusable? glibc?

>no software in official repos
Sure, compared to Arch and Debian/Ubuntu it lacks somewhat, but there's always the copr repositories (similar to Arch's AUR). Plus you can always build from source. Are you afraid of building from source?

>KDE like releases - everything is broken once a year from base up
I haven't had any major issues with it. Just a problem with the network card drivers when I installed it. Can't remember how I fixed it but it's been working perfectly since then.

>slow package manager (again its shitty default configuration)
I've used aptitude, pacman (and also yaourt and pacaur) and now use dnf every day. I think DNF is pretty stable and it makes me feel safe, whatever that means.

>Not to mention you have to fuck around to make samba or SElinux working the way you want
I use it as my main desktop OS so don't really have the need to do that kind of stuff. Anyhoo, if I wanted to use a Fedora-like distro to deploy to a server, I wouldn't choose Fedora: I'd choose CentOS.
>>
>>55891140

Just install Infinality. If I recall, it's some US based fuckery with patents around subpixel rendering.
>>
>>55903938
Runs just fine. I've got my root tree installed in the SSD and the /home tree in my HDD. Runs like a champ. In terms of boot-up and shutdown times, it's slower than Windows 10 to boot-up (maybe that's due to me having SDDM installed, dunno, although it loads i3 pretty quick) but faster than Windows 10 to shut down. For me it's a simple
poweroff
and it's off in 2-3 seconds tops.

It is true that turning it off from the KDE menu takes ages, but that's not Fedora's default after all.

>>55903991
>>
>>55903991

It's usually some shitty software ignoring TERM signals.

Just change the #DefaultTimeoutStopSec=90s to something not huge in /etc/systemd/system.conf
>>
>>55890841
the finder icon looks retarded you need to change it
>>
>>55904034

You can probably find out what is doing that with systemd-analyze blame.

Thanks for the tip. I rarely run KDE these days though, just i3, so that issue is long gone.

>shitty preconfiguration
yes turining on a freshly installed system and having 2 SElinux popups out of the box and another 2 every time you try to run firefox is really "right". And people shit at ubuntu for crashes after an full system upgrade. Protip - selinux wont shut itself up after a system reboot.
Also I didnt say dnf is bad, history is a really cool feature and it have not broken once for me but since the devs cannot put a sane default configuration for once its really really slow with downloads and checking repos for new packages unless you tweak it. Also the now-default-enabled auto updates can seriously take time when booting (or shutting down - i don't remember).
Also i talked about firewall , SELinux, boxes (virtual machines), or even samba gui config tools that are totally unintuitive even compared to cli/text based configs. And implying samba or SELinux or firewall is "server stuff" seems to be living in denial.

But my conclusion is its not a bad distro once you are able to tweak shit. Just like arch or <insert any maintained distro here>
>>
>>55905740
>>55904034
also i forgot to mention shitty default font rendering. Like really no reason for it in 2016.
