Is there any advantage to Ubuntu mini remix as opposed to something like Ubuntu mate or Xubuntu if I'm just after a lightweight distro that'll run smoothly on der hardware?

16.04 has inconsistent windows. Some are themed Gnome style and some XFCE. Go for Ubuntu Mate...the new Xubuntu.
