I built one in PHP about a decade ago. It was garbage, but it worked.
Then I built one in Python a year or so back. It was also garbage, but it also worked.

If all you want is boards, threads, and posts it's easy. If you want image uploading, security, moderation, and an auto-update feature like here then it gets significantly more complicated. I tried holding the binary data for images in *SQL and it was horrible. I separated the API from the front end completely and it was the best decision ever but as time went on I found myself mixing the two more and more and making spaghetti just getting some basic features down. I tried doing the entire frontend in Javascript so I could render the pages by simply pulling the API and building the page client side and learned I don't know Javascript.

I finally stopped working on it when I realized I don't know Javascript at all and how dependent on it these boards can be. I tried. I looked up examples, read documentation, tried a few color by numbers tutorials but in the end just making the reply box move and stretch yet alone saving the location and size of it in a cookie took nearly a week and I hadn't even started on an auto update.

It's not easy. It looks easy. It starts easy. You get a good pace going and suddenly oh-fuck-me.

Back in the day web sites had custom feedback clients like disqus. They were dirt simple, anonymous, and a good way to get started in databases and your server side language of choice. Start by building one of those.

Then why ask /g/? Running an existing board doesn't require any knowledge besides clicking and some basic glossary. You could have started a LAMP server and downloaded / run this whole thing locally to get a feel for the controls in the time it took me to type that post.

The community won't be any bigger than 420chan at it's peak. Maybe even smaller. This eliminates the majority of problems you're fussing about. It's not going to be some paid shithole like SA or a invite-only shithole like What.CD

Alternative imageboards aren't big in the first place, and my methods extend far beyond heavy-handed bans and draconian rules like Wiz or Tohno.

I am fully competent in dealing with any and everything I might encounter, I've spent years fantasizing about running my own imageboard and the only thing I'm not confident is, is in my ability to actually learn the necessary skills to make it reality.
