What would you guys say is a good book to learn about programming on linux. Specifically for someone who has only read things like K&R and similairs. Would pic related be a good idea.

No, it documents system calls, File I/O, Networking, Users and Group management etc. All programmatically.

The author's Python book sucks but his C book is good. Also take a look at this:
