So thinkpads are great true, but the market has been cannibalized and prices have increased.
Are there any other cheap older laptops, say in the $100 and under range, that have reasonable build quality and good Linux support?

look into your local market, you can find some great deals
I live in the bay area, I saw an ad for someone selling a thinkpad X220 for $100 today

My T42 has excellent build quality and runs xubuntu relatively well. Cost 40 syrupbucks.

couldn't find a decent thinkpad without a 1366x768 for less than $500, got a used dell xps/precision, cost slightly more but 2x the laptop
