Eventually they'll just drop pro edition all together and all there will be is home and enterprise.

Most of the businesses I work with are going to be holding on to Windows 7 until end of support, but shit like this is making a lot of admins I know really nervous. I have no idea what MS is thinking anymore. If they think small to midsize business have the cash to shell out for some sort of Windows subscription model they're insane.
>>
>>55871473
Begin the migration to GNU plus Linux
>>
>>55871527
thats's much easier said than done for SMBs. typically they'll be using some horrible old windows-only software to run their business so, short of migrating to thin clients and RDS, they continue to need to run windows on their desktops
>>
>>55871377
Microsoft has already started crippling Steam.

You sure got told, /v/.
>>
>>55871527
It's one of the options we're considering. Though like >>55871573 says, it'd have to be supported with some sort of RDS / VDI solution for legacy apps.
>>
>>55871573
They can use WINE or virtual machines.
I feel that in the coming years having knowledge of Linux will really pay off :D

Holy fuck this can't be real, THIS CAN'T BE REAL, they literally force you ads on your start menu and lockscreen. How long before they will block you from using classic shell?
>>
>>55871573
>>55871631
You can consider/try CrossOver, a commercially supported version of Wine:

>>
>>55871693
If they are not connected to Internet they don't have to worry, but otherwise they are asking for trouble.

Does Revit work in GNU/Linux?
>>
>>55871674
That's tempting, but one of the key sticking points is application vendor support. If the vendor still exists and you're running their app in an unsupported environment and suddenly need support the first thing they usually tell you is to fuck off. We'll likely be forced down the VM / RDS path for that reason.
>>
Microsoft trully embracing linux guys, they really hope more2 people use linux. They do everything, from windows linux subsystem, supporting them in the cloud, releasing their own apps for android, mssql, skype on linux, open sourcing countless libs and software and this and soon much more.

They hope with this strategy, more people move to linux, more innovation & consumer friendly software development.

So /g/, why not we support their mission, embracing linux, lets us all move to linux.
>>
>>55871729

He's referring to the '09 flavor of Windows Embedded. It's still on Extended Support.

i cant see why removing the option to disable something could be a deal breaker. just tell your stupid fucks of employees that they get whipped if they use the features your sysadmins cant disable anymore. M$ even offers activity tracking for this (which they didnt cut with pro so far, and theres open source alternatives, and such a logger would basically be programmed in half a days work anyway)
>>
>>55872381
>tell your employees
You job is to keep them in check, dipshit.

>>
>>55871625
Wincucks forced to use their "unified platform" bullshit.
>>
>>55871153
>Wincucks will defend this
I sure as fuck won't. Even at launch win 10 pro had less configurability than win 7/8.1.

It's a shit tier OS. I'm staying on 7 and moving to linux.
>>
>>55871833
This mentality will fall away if more people start using Linux.
>>
>>55872381
It's not so much this particular change, but what it indicates for the future that's the biggest concern. Windows 10 Pro doesn't offer full control over updates in an enterprise environment (already a big issue for IT), and now we see updates are being pushed that adjust OS features or remove them entirely. Not a good sign of things to come.

>>55872501
It'll be a long time coming, and it's not something we can depend on happening in order to move forward. Enterprise software companies are notoriously stingy when it comes to expanding existing product support to new platforms. And if they do, they'll definitely make you pay out the ass for it.

The real solution is to eventually move away from limited or incompatible software. Cloud stuff is really attractive nowadays because of that.
>>
>>55871833
You could probably slim down Windows 7/8 quite a lot if you only need to run one application.

Ubuntu LTS. Seriously - look at the usage stats and the size of the community. Ubuntu's installer (not kubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu etc) is the best Linux installer out there period.

If you come to Ubuntu with an open mind, you will see how it's just as easy as Windows, or easier (think of all the stupid tricks you've picked up over the years to deal with Windows shit).
